SimSig Victoria South Eastern Panel 10AThis panel covers Shortlands Junction to St. Mary Cray (inclusive). While there is a lot of track, it is relatively straightforward to operate as long as you read the timetable carefully.
The left-hand end incorporates Shortlands Junction. In the older era this is a flat junction with trains from Platform 1 up to Ravensbourne blocking all but one other route. The newer layout features a duck-under allowing trains via Ravensbourne to access the fast lines without interfering with the slow lines.
Take note of trains terminating at Bromley South from the Shortlands direction: if they return back to Shortlands then they must use the Down Chatham Fast line.
=
Bickley Junction is where trains to Orpington and beyond diverge off to the right. At this point there are four tracks from London Bridge passing over the four tracks from Victoria (the overhead tracks not being shown on the real panel or in the simulation) and there are two pairs of tracks joining to either side of the London Bridge tracks. As the line names imply, the Fast Chatham Loops are a faster connection than the Slow Chatham Loops; the latter merging onto the London Bridge tracks by ducking under them, turning sharply right and uphill before turning left and merging.
Down trains may use either connection to Petts Wood. However, adherence to the timetable is recommended where possible to avoid Ashford IECC getting irate! Trains scheduled fast line but routed slow line will also be a minute or two late by the time they reach Orpington due to the lower speed.
=
St Mary Cray junction could be considered to be a part of the Bickley complex. One up-direction-only track diverges off the Up Chatham Fast, briefly merges with the Down Slow Tonbridge loop (for historical space reasons - the connections to Petts Wood used to be single), before curving to the right and joining the Up Fast side of the London Bridge tracks just before Chislehurst station. On the other side is a reversible connection to the Up and Down Slow tracks via Chislehurt station.
Up trains may use either connection to Chislehurst. However, adherence to the timetable is recommended where possible to avoid Ashford IECC getting irate!

This signal is held at single yellow until its berth track has been occupied for 15 seconds or more. This only applies to the older era and is related to long-standing AWS issues at the time.
When set towards VS484, VS176 will show a single yellow at best until its berth track has been occupied for 15 seconds or more.
When set towards VS486, VS178 will show a single yellow at best until its berth track has been occupied for 15 seconds or more.
In the modern era there is a preliminary route indicator (PRI) prior to this signal. If the route over Shortlands is set towards Ravensbourne then this signal is held at double yellow if the train has already passed the PRI. This is not indicated on the panel but signallers can determine this by the occupancy of platform 1 at Bromley South.
When set to VS221, signal VS213 will only show a double yellow aspect at best regardless of whether VS221 is showing a double yellow or green aspect. It will also be held at single yellow (and VS221 at red) until a train approaches VS213.
For this signal to clear, one of the following sets of conditions must hold true:
- Berth track occupied (TBYH)
- Track approaching berth track occupied (TBYG)
- Points 871 normal
- Berth track of VS201 (TBTQ) occupied with route 201 to 215 set
- Train proceeding over route from 201 to 215
For this signal to clear, one of the following sets of conditions must hold true:
- Berth track occupied (TBZD)
- Track approaching berth track occupied (TBZE) with points 879 normal
- Points 879 and 880 normal
- Berth track of VS220 (TBXB) occupied with route 220 to 218 set
- Train proceeding over route from 220 to 218
In addition, with a route set from 218 to 208, no green aspect will be shown.
With a route set to VS290, VS220 will show a single yellow at best until the berth track for VS220 has been occupied for 10 seconds, whereupon it will step up to double yellow at best if conditions permit.
With a route set to VS218, VS220 will show a double yellow aspect at best.
In addition, because VS290 does not have an overlap, VS220 will not show a proceed aspect until VS290 has a route set.
For this signal to clear, one of the following sets of conditions must hold true:
- Berth track occupied (TBYL)
- Track approaching berth track occupied (TBYK)
- Points 878
- Berth track of VS213 (TBTU) occupied or points 872 reversed, both with route 213 to 221 set
- Train proceeding over route from 213 to 221
With a route set to VS290, VS222 will show a single yellow at best until the berth track for VS222 has been occupied for 10 seconds, whereupon it will step up to double yellow at best if conditions permit.
In addition, because VS290 does not have an overlap, VS222 will not show a proceed aspect until VS290 has a route set.
Identity | Description |

SHRTLND | All movements in the Shortlands Junction and Ravensbourne areas |
BRMLYS | Routes on the Fast Lines at Bromley South |
BCKLJ | All routes in the Bickley Junction area. VS201-VS213, VS201-VS215, and VS203-VS215 are also in the STMCJ subarea. |
STMCJ | All routes in the St. Mary Cray Junction area |
HWKWJ | Routes over the two points in the Hawkwood Junction area |
Panel 10A fringes to panels 8 and 9 at the west (left) end, and to panel 10B at the east (right) end.
There are also fringes to Ashford IECC as follows:
No special operation is required to send trains towards Orpington on this line.
Trains will show when in the Petts Wood area. No special operation is required to accept trains on this line.
No special operation is required to send trains towards Orpington on this line.
Trains will show when in the Petts Wood area. No special operation is required to accept trains on this line. An additional TD berth is provided which will be populated when a train is leaving Orpington station on the fast lines. This was provided to give enough advance warning of fast trains approaching - particularly during the Eurostar years of operation.
No special operation is required to send trains towards Chislehurst on this line. This isn't used so much for passenger trains but empty coaching stock may be held on the fringe at AD22 awaiting their booked path through Chislehurst.
Down trains from the London Bridge tracks will show when passing through Chislehurst station. No special operation is required to accept trains on this line.
Up trains towards the London Bridge tracks require the slot request to be operated and given by Ashford IECC before Victoria can send a train that way. The train will appear to "fall off" before reaching the platform: this is because the platform area only shows trains approaching in the down direction.
