I'm hoping someone in this forum knows their way around Irish (Republic) colour light signalling. If so, there are some signals around the Dublin area that have this additional single-aspect signal head below the main 3 aspect head. I have seen other signals with an additional two-aspect head but the lower aspect is blanked off.

Anyone know what it is for?

Yey! Something from my old stomping ground!

Unfortunately I know very little about Irish signalling, so can’t answer the question, but one thing I’ll say is that looks like quite an old photo. Bóthar Lansdúin looks nothing like that now!

Well, come to think of it, I'm not even sure if these still exist? The DVD I saw them on dates back to 2006. I've spent hours questioning "Uncle Google" but have come up with nought. I was just lucky enough to find this pic on the interweb to demonstrate my point.

I wonder if it has something to do with the level crossing. The signal is still there in 2012 (though you can’t see the aspects in the video):

The extra signal is the extra amber to form a double amber aspect. Those signals were part of the original re-signalling for the launch of the DART in the 80s and 4 aspect signalling was new to CIE.

All I know of Irish signalling is that green lever equals distant signal (or used to )

Thanks but I read that page top to bottom repeatedly and it doesn't help. It does mention that Double Yellow is used in the Irish Republic but it does not mention an additional single aspect yellow being retrofitted to a 3 aspect signal, as "Wheelman" alluded to.

That page, however, was very helpful explaining the "4 aspect" shunting signals.

Thank you most kindly. Although I never doubted you for one minute, I thought I'd research it a little more and see if Uncle Google could come up with a photo showing one of these signals actually displaying a Double Yellow aspect. So far. no luck, however, here is a photo of one of these retrofitted signals, albeit displaying a Red, but with the same explanation of the additional aspect.
