This simulation covers the Cornish mechanical signal boxes from the fringe with Plymouth Panel Signal Box at St Germans all the way to Penzance, including the branch lines to Looe, Fowey, Newquay, Parkandillack, Falmouth Docks and St Ives.
There are nine signal boxes simulated, controlling a variety of technologies from Mechanical with tokens and absolute block to modern SSI and relay based interlockings.

Scale of problems:
This will set the level/quantity of failures that you should expect in the sim. In None and Low setting, TDs will also be interposed at the siding entry points. In Medium and High setting, the TDs are not interposed.
None and low are classified as “Easy Mode”.
Train Operated Route Release:
This is a standard option as to whether or not Train Operated Route Release (TORR) is on in the sim. It is disabled by default. When disabled, the signals in the Largin area of Lostwithiel Signal Box will still TORR as this is prototypical.
Absolute Block:
This will select whether or not the absolute block is in use in your game. It is enabled by default.
Level Crossings:
Turns off level crossings if unticked. They will still be drawn on the screen but manual crossings will not need to be operated and no crossings will phone you.
Cornwall as it was signalled around the turn of the century. The line between Burngullow and Probus is still single track and the Falmouth Branch is controlled by a train staff.
By this time, Burngullow to Probus had been redoubled (2004) and the Falmouth Branch had a passing loop installed at Penryn Station to enable a half-hourly interval service on the Branch.
Various sidings and crossovers have now been removed, but an enhancement scheme has added extra signals at Menheniot (off-sim controlled by Plymouth Panel), Bodmin Parkway and several between Truro and St Erth. This enables a more frequent timetable to be operated on the Main Line.
Details on how to operate the Absolute Block system can be found in the separate Absolute Block manual .
In some cases not all of the track circuits between the home signal and the clearing point (shown with an overlap marker) are in the block controls. This is per real life and it is down to the Signalman to not give out of section until the train has cleared the clearing point, even if the interlocking permits it.
Semaphore signals are represented in this simulation, however where multiple arms exist on the same bracket in reality only one arm is shown in the sim.
Both three foot and four foot semaphores are drawn as main arms, four foot arms will clear green, three foot arms will show white when clear.
Whilst not directly simulated in the requirement to have points in a given position before a route will set and signals will clear, the sim will call points to certain positions and lock them there if required.
Mechanical areas do not generally have overlaps in the conventional sense, but all of the mechanical signal boxes in Cornwall have situations where points not directly in the route between any two signals will require to be in a certain position for the entrance signal to clear.
As an example, at Liskeard, a route from LD35 signal to LD34 signal will require Points LD22 to be in the normal position. When you attempt to set the route from LD35 to LD34 the sim will call and lock points LD22 to the normal position, and if they are lying reverse and not free to move you will not be able to set the route. There are too many examples of this throughout the sim to list them all individually, but these are true to real life not sim errors.
Back locking is provided in several places. This is where a signal off holds points on the approach to it in the position they were lying when it was cleared. The points will free up when the route is cancelled.
Generally, signals at either end of the same line will hold each other at danger. For example you can clear either SE54 or SE66 in the Up Platform at St Erth, but never both together.
Automatic Code Insertion is not available in reality in any signal box in the Cornwall area. It was added to the sim due to the large numbers of TD interposes that are required in normal operation, and therefore as an aid to playability. It is on by default and can be toggled off per location on the screen.

Each location can be toggled on or off individually.
There is a toggle on the bottom left of the sim that can be set to display the mileage of each station on the screen. It defaults to off and when operated will display all mileages on the whole sim. Mileages are measured from London Paddington via Box Tunnel and the former Plymouth Millbay station.
Penzance works Absolute Block to the next signal box, St Erth.
Trains towards Penzance T&RSMD need telephone permission from the Shunter before sending them in. You will be able to set the route without permission but will be penalised for doing so.
You cannot set a route upto either Signal PZ26 or Signal PZ28 unless an onward route is set, and these signals have to be showing a proceed aspect before any signal reading up to them will display a proceed aspect.
You cannot signal a train from PZ2 signal into the Carriage Reception Line with Long Rock Crossing in Auto. If you have the auto selected on the crossing the signal will not clear.
The train describer at Penzance Station displays the last arrival at the stop block and next departure at the signal, descriptions at the stop block will not step out of the station with trains.
Trains booked to the Down Sidings or Sea Sidings will exit the sim unless they are timetabled back out in the opposite direction, in which case they will reverse immediately behind PZ71 or PZ44 signals respectively.
St Erth is the junction, facing East, for the picturesque St Ives Branch.
Trains on the branch are worked by a staff kept in St Erth Signal Box and issued to drivers when they pass the box. There is no real-life interlocking between this staff and the signalling system. In SimSig, it is assumed that the driver will collect and return the staff when they are required to do so, and the signals are set up exactly as per real life. Nothing will stop you from clearing SE62 with a train already on the branch, but you will receive a penalty for doing so, and any trains will stop at it and complain they have the wrong route set.
In easy mode, there is a positive indication of a train being on the non-track circuited part of the branch.
The East Crossover (SE48 Points) and Down Sidings were removed in approximately 2015, so only feature in the 2000 and 2009 eras.
Trains will call you on arrival at, and before departure from, St Ives.
ACI is provided for Bay Platform 3 at St Erth and for St Ives Station.
St Erth works Absolute Block to Penzance and Roskear Junction.
Roskear Junction is a block post which no longer has a junction, it having been removed in the 1980s.
When a train reaches an appropriate time to lower the barriers at Camborne and Roskear Junction, a message will appear in the message box. This occurs in the up direction when a train strikes in at Gwinear Road AHB, and in the down direction when a train leaves Redruth Station.
Dolcoath Crossing is a conventional AHB in the 2000 and 2009 eras, but was converted to an MCB-OD (Obstacle Detection) with the Cornwall Capacity Enhancement Scheme in 2019. In the later era it is worked as an approximation of an OD crossing within the current limitations of SimSig. OD crossings are designed to be fully automatic with no input from the Signaller. At Dolcoth the crossing will automatically lower whenever a train is on RAA Track Circuit, the route is set from R4 signal and Camborne Crossing is down and clear. In the Down Direction, the crossing will automatically lower whenever a route is set from R25 signal and RBA track circuit has been occupied for a minimum of twelve seconds. For both directions, the crossing must be in AUTO to lower automatically, and can be both lowered and raised manually as long as the interlocking conditions to do so are met. Crossing Clear is automatically given by the sim after a slight delay when the barriers are down. This delay is to simulate the Radar sweeps that occur in reality on OD crossings.
R25 Signal had an auto working facility installed in connection with the OD crossing at Dolcoath. In SimSig this is replicated slightly unconventionally as the route needs to release over the crossing in order for the sim to raise the barriers. The sim will automatically set the route from R25 if the auto facility is enabled and a train is approaching it. If a reminder is applied to R25 signal, the route will not be set irrespective of the auto facility setting.
In the 2019 era, Roskear Junction has a slot on T45 Signal. If a train is approaching either T46 or T45 signals and routed towards Roskear Junction, the description will display in the approach berth. With the slot granted, it will regrant itself after the passage of each train until such time as it is cancelled by the Signaller.
Roskear Junction Ground Frame (R15) was an oddity in railway operations. Converted to a ground frame when the lever frame inside the signal box was condemned, it was not interlocked with the signalling system in reality, having to be released by the S&T Technician to operate. This is largely what led to its demise. In the 2000 and 2009 eras of this sim it is present, but in line with long standing SimSig policy not to allow potential collisions the frame is interlocked with the signalling. There are no timing locations or paths over it however as it was an emergency crossover, so trains will need to be stopped and reversed manually to use it.
In the 2019 era, there is a tail lamp camera which will show two red dots when a tail lamp is visible.
Roskear Junction works Absolute Block to St Erth in all eras, and to Truro in the 2000 and 2009 eras. In the 2019 era, it works Track Circuit Block to Truro.
Truro is a major station, the busiest in Cornwall for passenger numbers by a significant distance.
It’s signal box controls a wider area, having taken over down to Falmouth in a rationalisation in the 1970s. There are now three platforms in use, a West facing bay used for Falmouth Branch services and the up and down through platforms.
In the 2000 era, the Falmouth Branch was worked by an Annets Key kept on the down platform and released by Truro Signal Box. Only one train could be between Penwithers Junction and Falmouth Docks. If a train is “shut in” at Falmouth Dockyard then the staff has to be returned to Truro by road. The staff is enabled or disabled dependent on the choice of Absolute Block and Tokens at startup. In 2009 the passing loop was added at Penryn to enable a two-train operation with a half hourly interval service. The branch is Track Circuit Block from Truro to Penryn and then one train working without a staff between Penryn and Falmouth Docks, and is depicted as such in the 2009 and 2019 eras.
In the 2000 era, a train booked for the Falmouth Branch MUST be booked to call at Truro to collect the staff, which it will call to do when it is ready to depart. Trains will not depart from Truro towards Penwithers Junction if they are booked to go to Falmouth and do not have the staff, irrespective of the aspect in the platform starting signal. This is suppressed if Absolute Block and Tokens are disabled.
When Penryn Loop was first commissioned there was a facility retained to allow access into Falmouth Dockyard with a staff being released from Penryn which was only required to operate the ground frames at Falmouth, and not needed for passenger trains. This facility was never used in traffic and was removed a few years later, so it is not included in the simulation. In the 2000 era, the ground frames and access to Falmouth Dockyard are available. In order to release the ground frames a train needs to be present at them and in possession of the staff (if Absolute Block and Tokens are on). The red "L" light next to each ground frame will be solid when the frame is unavailable, and hollow when the frame can be released. You cannot release both frames simultaneously. Once a train arrives at Falmouth GF No.1, you will get a message to tell you. Once a train departs the frames towards Truro, you will get a message to tell you, unless you have already normalised and locked both frames in which case the departure message is suppressed. When a train arrives at Falmouth Dockyard you will have a choice as to whether you want the Shunter to return the staff to Truro by road, or whether to retain it at Falmouth Dockyard for the next train. If you have a train ready to enter at the Dockyard and the Staff is at Truro, the Shunter will request the Staff from Truro beforehand. It takes approximately twenty minutes to move the Staff by road.
When passing trains at Penryn, the normal sequence is to clear T9 and let the up train arrive at Penryn Station, then once that train is in clear set T43 to T42 and T42 to Falmouth for the down train. T10 to T5 can then be set for the up train to continue to Truro.
T5R Signal is fixed at caution in the 2000 era.
The overlap track sections for the signals at Penryn are shared between opposing signals using “phantom” overlaps. As such they will require the track sections clear to the overlap markers, but the overlaps will not illuminate in the sim.
Due to the close proximity of the level crossing to the station platforms, you cannot set any route approaching T6 or T28 signals unless the barriers are down and clear.
Truro works Absolute Block to Par in all eras, and to Roskear Junction in the 2000 and 2009 eras. In the 2019 era, it works Track Circuit Block to Roskear Junction.
Par is a significant junction on the Cornish Main Line, where the branch to Newquay diverges.
The signal box controls from just East of Par to Probus, some fifteen miles away, the control are having been extended when the line between Burngullow Junction and Probus was singled in the 1980s, which is depicted in the 2000 era of the sim.
This line was redoubled in 2004 due to capacity issues.
Par station area is controlled with the lever frame, whilst St Austell to Probus is on a small panel controlling two remote relay interlockings.
Trains terminating at Par from the Lostwithiel direction will call you on arrival to confirm they are complete with tail lamp, this is so you can give out of section to Lostwithiel as the train will not pass the signal box. All trains in Par Down Goods Loop and the Liner Siding will always call you when they arrive for the same reason.
The Liner Siding is accessed by a set of hand points which are simulated by control buttons on the screen. Normal is for the Up Siding, Reverse is for the Liner Siding. If the F roundel is red you will not be able to move the points as there is a train sat on them. You should set the points correctly before clearing signal PR15. If the hand points are set incorrectly, trains will call wrong route from PR15. This is controlled by left clicking the N and R roundels on the screen. The normal lie of the points is drawn but this does not change when the points are reversed.
Trains cannot arrive into Par platforms 2 and 3 in the up direction simultaneously.
You can "block back" from PR40 behind PR53 signal. In order to do so, set the route from PR40 to the grey arrow behind PR53 signal, and you will require the block to be at NOR if Absolute Block is enabled. When you set the route the block will automatically show TOL. Once the train clears the clearing point, you need to send Out of Section in the normal way.
St Austell Ground Frame is released by Par, and has a release against each line. The overlap on PR104 will have needed to time off before release 302 can be obtained.
The overlap on PR107 Signal at Burngullow Junction does not swing. To send a train over the crossover towards Parkandillack you need to wait for the overlap to time off before you will be able to move Points 303 or set a route over the crossover.
Trains going in to and out of the China Clay Sidings at Burngullow will be automatically routed by the sim. If anything not timetabled to use the China Clay Sidings is sent towards the Branch the sim will automatically send it towards Parkandillack. In order to request and drop off the staff, the train has to be booked to stop at Burngullow Clay Sidings.
Burngullow Junction to Parkandillack is controlled by a train staff kept in the Shunters Cabin at Burngullow Junction. When a train is ready to go down the Branch the Shunter will call for permission to take the Staff and pass the Stop Boards. The Staff will be returned when the train arrives back at Burngullow. Whenever a train is on the branch, it will remain captive within the sim.
In order to set the auto facilities at Burngullow and Probus all the signals in each group need to have their main route set before you engage the auto working. This is slightly different to some other Western Region sims, but is true to real life in this location. They were added when the line was redoubled so are not provided in the 2000 era.
The block section on the Up Main between Truro and Probus has an axle counter section running through it, this is to allow the Signalman at Par to give Out of Section to Truro once the train passes the overlap of PR112 Signal rather than needing to wait to see the tail lamp.
If St Blazey accepts a train from Par under Regulation 5, Signal PR9 will become approach released from red.
The section between Par and St Blazey is very short, so it is advisable to clear signals as soon as you accept a train if able to do so.
There is a route from PR16 into the Down Goods Loop but in reality no signal exists at the other end. A white arrow is provided to allow you to set the route into the loop and the train will always stop short of the spring point at the Lostwithiel end of the loop.
Par works Absolute Block to Lostwithiel, St Blazey and Truro.
Lostwithiel is a small town with a relatively minor station, but it’s junction with the Fowey Branch Line and the goods traffic that accompany it make it one of the busiest boxes in the county.
The station area is controlled by the lever frame, whilst there is a panel to control the Largin Single Line and Bodmin Parkway.
The branch to the clay sidings at Fowey Docks Carne Point is operated with a train staff normally kept in Lostwithiel Signal Box. It is not interlocked with the signals.
For trains heading from Lostwithiel to Fowey, you should press the ISSUE AT LL button before the train passes the station, the staff will then automatically be taken by the train as it passes the box. If you do not issue the staff, the train will stop at LL57 signal irrespective of its aspect, and call to complain of a wrong route. The same process exists for trains from the Bay Sidings and LL16 Signal. On arrival at Fowey Docks, the Shunter will call and let you know.
For trains from Fowey Docks to Lostwithiel, the Shunter will call for permission to issue the staff to the Driver and pass the Stop Board at Carne Point. Once granted the train will proceed to Lostwithiel and surrender the staff on passing the Signal Box.
If the staff is at Fowey Docks but the next train is from the Lostwithiel end, you can place a telephone call to instruct the Shunter to return it, which will take a period of time roughly equivalent to the real life road journey. Similarly if the staff is at Lostwithiel and the Shunter has a train ready at Fowey you can instruct him to collect it from the Signal Box, which will also take a period of time relative to the real life road journey.
Trains booked to reverse behind LL11 signal will need to be sent towards Par and not Fowey. This is a limitation of the token system. If you send them towards Fowey they will phone wrong route.
For regulation purposes, it is recommended to clear LL1025 signal at Largin once a train departs Liskeard. There is an annunciator for the Up Direction which will sound when a train leaves Bodmin Parkway, this is the appropriate time to clear LL1028 Signal.
Annunciators are also provided for the appropriate time to lower Lostwithiel Level Crossing and clear signals on the main lines. The Down Annunciator will sound when the train leaves Bodmin Parkway, the Up Annunciator will sound when a train passes PR51 Signal if PR100 Signal is off, or when PR100 is cleared otherwise. The Up Annunciator is a compromise included in SimSig that is not present in real life to aid playability, the Down Annunciator is real to life.
Trains booked to run round in the Down Goods Loop can be routed into the Up Goods Loop for this purpose as well.
You cannot set a route from LL56 into the Up Goods Loop unless Track Section LLCD is occupied.
You cannot reverse Points 38 or 41 without the barriers down and clear.
There is an "LCK" indication on the crossing which will be red if you are unable to raise the barriers for any reason, such as routes set, track circuit occupancy or points reverse.
Due to only one short track section between LL47 and LL46 signals, LL47 may not always TORR if there is a train remaining within the Goods Loop.
To release Bodmin Parkway Ground Frame you either need the section clear or occupied with a train actually in the platform at Bodmin Parkway.
In the 2019 era, Lostwithiel has a slot on LD32 Signal. If a train is approaching or at Liskeard and routed towards Largin, the description will display in the approach berth. With the slot granted, it will regrant itself after the passage of each train until such time as it is cancelled by the Signaller.
Due to the close proximity of the level crossing to the station platforms, you cannot set any route approaching LL5 or LL36 signals unless the barriers are down and clear.
Lostwithiel works Absolute Block to Par, and Track Circuit Block to Liskeard.
Liskeard is the fringe box to Plymouth Panel and the junction for the Looe Branch.
The main lines are simple up and down with a crossover at each end of the station, with the junction for the Looe Branch at the Plymouth end of the up platform.
The Branch to Looe is accessed through the goods yard, and the connection is not rated for passenger use. The section between Liskeard and Coombe Junction No.2 Ground Frame is worked by tokens released from Liskeard Signal Box, the section from Coombe Junction No.1 Ground Frame to Looe is worked by a train staff. Freight trains going onto the branch need to be timetabled with a stopping point of Far End in Liskeard Platform 2.
In SimSig the tokens are released and returned by phone calls, and the staff is not simulated at all. A train to go onto the Branch will need to be booked to stop at Liskeard where he will call to collect a token, and will not depart until the token is released irrespective of the aspect in LD3 signal. This is not prototypical as the train in reality would just stop at the box to collect the token, however it is this way in SimSig for simplicity. The three ground frames on the branch are marked on the screen as they are timing points, but they are operated automatically with no player interaction.
Trains from Liskeard Yard to Liskeard Yard Ground Frame cannot have passing time ticked at Liskeard Yard in order to collect the token when ready to depart from Liskeard Yard.
Any train approaching Liskeard from Coombe Junction will be routed towards the yard automatically unless line code “BAY” is used at Liskeard Yard Ground Frame, in which case it will be sent to the bay platform.
The train descriptions will automatically step along the branch with the train, and the token calls are based upon what is in the train descriptions. Therefore if you change a TD you may get incorrect headcodes in the token calls.
If the token system goes out of sequence with it left out and no trains in section, you can call Par S&T Department to fix the fault. This will take them between five and ten minutes after you make the request. If you ask for the tokens to be fixed with a train in section, the S&T will refuse.
In the 2019 era, Plymouth has a slot on LD4 signal that will automatically be regranted after each train clears the signal UM259 at Menheniot.
The two points at Liskeard yard are controlled by control buttons on the screen. Normal is for the Bottom Siding, Reverse is for the Top Siding. If the F roundel is red you will not be able to move the points as there is a train sat on them. The normal lie of the points is drawn but this does not change when the points are reversed.
Liskeard works Track Circuit Block to Lostwithiel and Plymouth Panel.
The site of the main goods yard in the county, with its distinctive half-roundhouse locomotive shed, St Blazey is a shadow of its former self today.
The signal box today supervises two CCTV crossings and the junction into the Goods Yard, Loco shed and Par Docks.
There is a token system on the line between here and Goonbarrow Junction. It is operated by offering the train to Goonbarrow, who can then grant you the release of a token, which is handed to the driver. Trains will not depart from St Blazey onto the single line if the token is not released at the St Blazey end, irrespective of the aspect in SB39 Signal. This restriction does not apply if the train is booked to reverse at SB2 Signal. Right clicking the offer button cancels the token given, but remember if you press release erroneously it is the Signaller at the other end of the section who has the token in his hand so it is him who needs to right click offer to replace it.
Up trains from Goonbarrow Junction will automatically return the token on passing the box.
St Blazey is permitted to accept a non-passenger train from Par under the provisions of Absolute Block Regulation 5 (TS3 Reg 3.5 in modern terminology) in order to allow a train to approach SB40 signal whilst another is entering or leaving the yard. If you accept a train under Reg 5 then the clearing point is SB40 signal only rather than the full clearing point to SB39. As a result of this PR9 signal at Par becomes approach released from red to simulate the Signaller at Par "checking" the train at the section signal. If you have accepted a train under Reg 5 and the full clearing point becomes available then you can click ACC and the full clearing point will then set and PR9 signal clear immediately.
St Blazey works Absolute Block to Par, and Token to Goonbarrow Junction.
Goonbarrow Junction is the last remaining intermediate passing loop on the Newquay Branch Line. It also controls the entry into the Clay Sidings at Rocks China Clay Works.
Points G15 are locked either way by a route from G1 signal, so these should be set before clearing G1 when the train is going straight to St Blazey without passing anything.
The token to St Blazey works in the same way as described in the St Blazey section above.
The line to Newquay is worked with a staff, released from an instrument in Goonbarrow Junction Signal Box. If you press release the train will automatically take the staff on passing the box and return it automatically when it returns.
Trains will call on arrival at Newquay and for permission to depart from Newquay.
Based upon 15th October 2009. The Penzance- Plymouth line has an approximately hourly service, which varies between express services to London and more local services to Plymouth, which sometimes extend beyond Plymouth. The 'Night Riviera' sleeper service operates to and from Penzance overnight. There are several Cross Country departures from Penzance in the morning to northern England and Scotland, with corresponding returns in the evening. On the branches, St Ives and Falmouth receive half-hourly shuttle services from St Erth and Truro respectively, Looe on average every 75 minutes and 7 trains per day between Newquay and Par. London services are operated by HSTs, CrossCountry by Class 220/221 units and the rest by a mix of classes 150, 153 and 158.
On the freight side, there is a small amount of China Clay traffic from Fowey to various yards, and cement traffic to Moorswater.
Summer Saturday, based upon 10th June 2017. Throughout the summer, services in Cornwall are filled with holidaymakers, particularly at the weekend with those travelling to and from hotels and holiday lets in the region. Service frequencies are similar to the 15/10/2009 timetable, however there are several extra services on the main line, and significantly more main line services run to/from London in place of the local services; Cross Country also operate trains throughout the day. The Newquay line still receives 7 trains per day, though instead of the Par shuttle these run to London (2 trains) Dundee and Manchester (1 train each) and the remainder to Plymouth. There is no freight on Saturday, nor is there a Saturday evening Sleeper departure. Traction is as per 15/10/2009, though CrossCountry use a HST on some services.
Winter weekday, based upon 9th January 2019, with lots of freight moves. Passenger services remain much the same as 2009, though there are a handful of extras on the main line in anticipation of the half-hourly service which was introduced later in the year.
Traction-wise, times are changing, with HSTs starting to be displaced on the London services by Class 800 and Class 801 units. However, some HSTs were retained as four carriage 'Castle' sets, which replaced Class 15x units on some Penzance- Plmouth workings, the displaced 150s and 158s being used to strengthen other services. The timetable captures the middle of this transition.

There are some level crossings that are drawn on the sim screen but have no telephones in reality. These are not included on this list as there is no way for players to interact with them.
AOCL, AOCL+B and ABCL Crossings all work in the same way as UWC with Telephone Crossings.
Cornwall SimSig can be played by one player.
It divides nicely into three for multiplayer, with one player taking Penzance, St Erth and Roskear Junction, another taking Truro, Par, St Blazey and Goonbarrow Junction, and the third taking Lostwithiel and Liskeard.

All other sidings, trains will drop off the sim if sent in and enter as an Entry Location in the timetable.
Trains for the Parkandillack Branch must be timetabled to call at Burngullow Clay Sidings in both directions to collect and return the staff. You can seed a train at Parkandillack but nowhere else on the branch. For trains that originate at Drinnick Mill, seed at Parkandillack and timetable a short move down to Drinnick Mill.
Trains for the Falmouth Branch in the early era must be booked to stop at Truro to collect the staff.
Trains to and from Falmouth Dockyard or Loop need to stop at Falmouth No.1 Ground Frame in both directions.
Trains to go onto the Looe Branch at Liskeard must be booked to stop at Liskeard to collect the token.
