Overview

This simulation covers various boxes on "The Marches" route between Dorrington in the North, and Little Mill Junction in the South, as well as the Heart of Wales Line controlled by Pantyffynnon box. Most of the boxes work absolute block to one another, though this can be turned off if you prefer. The Heart of Wales Line uses the No Signaller Token Remote System and this is fully simulated.

Hereford is the main signalbox, and station along the route, with the Junction to Ledbury; Towards Worcester, diverging to the north.

The simulation is set over a wide era roughly speaking from 2004 when Church Stretton box was officially abolished, to just after the closure of Newport panel. The IB signal at Abergavenny has not been simulated, but makes little difference to the running of the supplied timetable.

Use Of Welsh Language

During the creation of the Wales & Borders series the use of the Welsh langauge has been a source of much fun and enjoyment. I have tried to use the English version of place names throughout the simulation, sometimes due to the fact I speak the Welsh language, and have lived in Wales most of my life a Welsh version of a place names "slips through the net" especially in cases where it is hard for the testing team to spot the difference (eg English - Treforest / Welsh - Trefforest).

Features

Absolute Block

Details on how to operate the Absolute Block system can be found in the separate Absolute Block manual .

Emergency Alarms

An emergency alarm can be sent to a fringe box where one is available. This will hold trains approaching your area. The fringe signal box will immediately replace his last most signal to danger. When chained these will also work across the boundary.

Options

Absolute Block

The absolute block controls can be turned on or off in two stages, these are as follows:

Absolute Block : Turning this off will disable all AB controls between Dorrington and Little Mill Junction inclusive.

Absolute Block - Fringes : Turning this off will disable the AB controls between Dorrington and Sutton Bridge Junction.

Note if chained to Shrewsbury the Fringe option on both sims must match.

Train Operated Route Release (TORR)

Train Operated Route Release was not fitted to any location within the simulation. There is an option provided to turn it on or off. Off is the most realistic setting.

Scale of Problems

Choose the scale of train delays and infrastructure failures. The normal SimSig options of “None”, “Low”, “Medium” and “High” are available. Select which one you wish to play from the drop-down menu.

Level Crossings

All of the manually controlled crossings can be disabled on start up. When this option is selected disabled crossings will be drawn in grey.

Workstation Overview

Dorrington

Operational notes:

* You are in control of an IB section on Down towards Marsh Brook

* You are in control of an IB section on the Up towards Sutton Bridge Junction

* The main to main crossover is within the clearing point on the up

Marshbrook

Operational notes:

* A down annunciator is provided

Craven Arms

Operational notes:

* The Junction from Knighton falls within the clearing point on the up.

* CA23 is locked by the Knighton token towards Knighton.

* The line between Craven Arms and Knighton is controlled by the NSTR system under the control of Pantyffynnon panel you should liase with Pantyffynnon workstation before releasing a token.

* To release a token left click on the release token roundal.

* CA23 can only be cleared towards Knighton when the Knighton out token roundal is lit.

* Trains will automatically return the token when they arrive at Craven Arms.

* The DGL is 437m long

Onibury

Operational notes:

* Level crossing barriers should be lowered when recieving train entering section.

Bromfield

Operational notes:

* An up train approaching annunciator is provided.

Woofferton

Operational notes:

* A spring point is provided where the up goods loop rejoins the mainline.

* The UGL is 414m long

Leominster

Operational notes:

* Leominster AHB is fitted with stopping and none stopping controls on the up. These must be selected before LE5 is cleared.

Moreton-On-Lugg

Operational notes:

* A down train approaching annunciator is provided.

* The Up main between here and Hereford is worked by Track Circuit Block.

* The Down main is worked by absolute block.

Hereford

Operational notes:

* The Down main between Moreton on Lugg and Hereford is worked by Track Circuit Block.

* The Up main is worked by absolute block

* Hereford diesel sidings is an entry exit point

* Hereford Down Sidings is not an exit point.

* The line to Ledbury is worked by Tokenless Block. This is represented by the two slots, and the train in section roundals.

Tram Inn

Operational notes:

* A down train approaching annunciator is provided.

* An up train approaching annunciator is provided.

* The DGL is 460m long

Pontrilias

Operational notes:

* Spring points are provided where the Goods loop rejoins the mainline

* The UGL is 461m long

Abergavenny

Operation notes:

  • The UGL is 345m long

Little Mill Junction

Operational notes:

* LM110 is a one button click signal and will act as though it has an auto button enabled until replaced by the user.

* LM111 is a one button click signal and will act as though it has an auto button enabled until replaced by the user.

* Panteg Ground Frame requires 506 points reverse, or free to go reverse to be released.

* The UGL is 427m long

* The DGL is 429m long

* There is no route onto the C&W siding at Panteg, trains need to be talked past the relevant signal.

Pantyffynon

Operational notes:

  • The line between PF4 signal and Craven Arms is controlled by the NSTR system under your control.
  • The signaller at Craven Arms should ask your permission before issuing a token to a down train.
  • You should advise the signaller at Craven Arms when you give permission for a token to be withdrawn at Knighton for an up train.
  • The signaller at Craven Arms will advise you that an up train has arrived complete when the token is replaced.
  • You should issue a token to trains at Panyffynnon by clicking on the release token roundel.
  • Trains arriving at Pantyffynnon will restore the token to the instrument automatically.
  • When a driver arrives at a remote crossing loop he will call and surrender the token.
  • When a driver is ready to depart a remote crossing loop he will call to request the appropriate token and authority to proceed.
  • When a driver wishes to enter the remote loop from a ground frame he will call to request the appropriate token.
  • When a driver passes into a ground frame controlled siding at a remote loop and is finished he will surrender the token.
  • The points at the remote loops are train operated.
  • Trains can only arrive into the platform in direction of travel, but can depart from either platform.
  • The train descriptions will follow the train along the NSTR controlled sections.
  • PF2R is a fixed colour light distant.
  • At present the remote ground frames at Llandovery and Llandeilo are booked out of use.
  • The line between Pantyffynnon and Hendy Junction (Port Talbot) is controlled by acceptance switches in both directions. In order to set a route towards Port Talbot you must request PT401 down acceptance.
  • In order for Port Talbot to send a train towards you, you must grant PF1 Up Acceptance.
  • IMPORTANT - Before giving permission to a driver at Llandeilo to withdrawn a token to proceed to Pantyffynnon you should ensure PF1 Up Acceptance is normal, and the single line clear throughout to Hendy Junction OR that the train accepted in the up direction is booked to Pantyffynnon Sidings. Once authority to withdraw a token is given it is good practice to place a reminder appliance on PF1.

    Level Crossings

There are seveal different types of level crossings on the sim.

Due to the large amount of User Worked Crossings on the simulation each has been given a unqiue number. UWCS on the "mainline" are prefixed with a "*" before the number, the higher the number the further south the crossing is. On the "Heart of Wales Line" each UWC has a three digit number with the higher the number the further south the crossing is.

Crossing Type Located Between Workstation

Multiplayer and Chaining

The sim is manageable by one person when playing the standard timetable, and is ideal for two or three people to play in multiplayer.

Hereford chains to Shrewsbury, Newport and Port Talbot.

Concessions

* Accurate information on the working of the Gawun-Cae-Gurwen train staff, particularly the ability to move the staff by road, has not been obtainable. As such the train staff is not currently simulated.
