The current Huddersfield Box, located on Platforms 4 & 8 was commissioned on 30th November 1958 to control from Diggle and Penistone through to Deighton.
Huddersfield box fringes with Healey Mills PSB at Bradley Jn in the North, with routes from there heading towards Bradford, Wakefield & Leeds. The double track line then runs south to Huddersfield itself which comprises of both an Up & Down Main platform (Platforms 1 & 8), a south bay for the Penistone Branch (Platform 2), two north bays (Platforms 5 & 6) and a further through platform, platform 4, which is usually used to terminate trains in from both directions. Huddersfield also has a small set of carriage sidings facilitating overnight berthing and cleaning.
Leaving Huddersfield heading south, the three lines head through Huddersfield North & South Tunnels and then split. A single track line heads towards Penistone, and the fringe with Barnsley Signal Box. This section of line under Huddersfield's control is single track except for a double track section between Stocksmoor and Shepley.
Meanwhile, the main line meanders south through Slaithwaite to Marsden, which boasts a Down loop allowing stopping or freight trains to be recessed, and signals allowing trains from Huddersfield to be turned back. Leaving Marsden the line passes through Standedge Tunnel to Diggle Jn where Diggle Junction box takes over. Here there is a passing loop on the Up line at the former junction and also a turnback facility for northbound trains. Control is then transferred to the fringe box at Stalybridge.
