When setting up a new simulation, there are a number of options which affect the simulation as a whole. Mostly these options cannot be changed after startup so it is important to get them right before getting deeply involved in a game.
The most authentic operation in terms of the real-life IECC, and also the most difficult. You will be required to interpose train descriptions in various sidings and yards.
Some additional help is given.
The easiest option with train descriptions automatically interposed in most places.
The track layout as it was since the millennium.
The Bicester- Oxford line is now in use; additional signal sections were also added between Princes Risborough and Bicester North.
The two signalboxes at Banbury have closed, with control passing to West Midlands Signalling Centre. The station area was extensively remodelled, with a new light maintenance depot built at the south end of the station. The line southwards to the fringe with Oxford PSB was also re-signalled, with shorter headways.
In the Chalfont area of the LUL (full) section, the southbound line has some extended overlaps which are switched in during autumn leaf fall season. This option simulates the switching in of these extended overlaps. This applies to overlaps at signals JT9, JT10, A975, A973, and A971. The linespeed is also reduced to 40mph from Mantles Wood to signal JJ71B at Watford South Junction (there are lower fixed limits as well). All of these apply to the Up direction only as this is downhill from Mantles Wood.
None: ARS is disabled on start-up. Note that, if selected, ARS cannot be switched on during the game- if you're unsure, select a different option and when the simulation starts, turn off ARS sub areas as desired.
IECC: The routes ARS can set are as per the ones it can set in real life. Broadly, this means that ARS won't set routes into yards, sidings and occupied platforms.
Extended: ARS will set a greater range of routes, including into yards, sidings and occupied platforms.
Simple: The LUL-owned area between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Amersham, inclusive, is removed from view and is effectively replaced by a simple double-track line for services between Marlyebone and Aylesbury. LUL traffic is not simulated.
Full: The LUL section is fully simulated, and you are also in control of all LUL traffic.
