Birmingham International

  • Platforms 1, 2, and 5 allow

permissive working: that is, more than one train can be signalled into the platform. The other two platforms, 3 and 4, do not allow permissive working.

  • Platforms 1, 2, and 5 each have two train describer berths. They also have TRTS indicators at both ends of the platform. Platforms 3 and 4 only have one TD berth and one TRTS indicator at the "normal" direction end of the platform.
  • Signal NS32 will only show green if NS31 is also showing green. This results in a R-Y-YY-YY-G aspect sequence.
  • Reduced overlaps will be set at signals 19, 21, 22 and 23 will be set if the points ahead of them cannot be set in the required direction.
  • Flashing yellow aspects are available from signal 12 to platforms 1 and 2.

  • Up through passenger trains should not be routed to platform 3, and Down through passenger trains should not be routed to platform 4. This is because the platform starter signals have a fixed red aspect with a subsidiary aspect, and passenger trains generally should not depart under subsidiary signals. Similarly passenger trains reversing should not use 4 from the Stechford direction or 3 from the Coventry direction.

Adderley Park

  • Signal NS437 will only show green if NS439 is also showing green (later eras only). This results in a R-Y-YY-YY-G aspect sequence.

St. Andrews Junction

When a train is signalled towards St. Andrews Junction by the Saltley signaller, and the train is destined towards Birmingham New Street, then the Saltley signaller will press a slot request button. That appears on New Street's panel as a flashing white light labelled "Saltley Camp Hill Advance Slot Request". The New Street signaller (you) grant the slot by setting a virtual route from signal SY37 (adjacent to the word "APPR") to either the Down Camp Hill line (to signal NS127) or to the Up & Down Camp Hill line (to NS130 signal). When the route has been set, and the train is approaching signal SY37 then the approach track will light in red.

When notification of an approaching train is received, look at its timetable to decide which route to set. A line code of DEL signifies that the Down Camp Hill route should be used; WL signifies the U&D Camp Hill line. There is no restriction or penalty if you decide to use a different route - unless the train arrives in a different platform to that which it's timetabled to use at Birmingham New Street which would involve a transfer of passengers from one platform to another. Note that access to platforms 1 to 6 is only available via the Stour (WL) lines.

Landor Street Junction

The approach TD berth will show the train approaching via Landor Street Junction. When the track beneath turns red the the train has passed the last green before your first signal, i.e. signal NS128, and any cancellation os NS128 will result in a time-out and adverse change of aspect for the approaching train.

Four Oaks

The approach TD berth will show the train approaching when at or beyond Gravelly Hill. Similarly the approach track will light when the train is at or beyond Gravelly Hill.

Lever Frames

All lever frames under the control of New Street have a release timer of between 120 and 180 seconds (2-3 minutes). Release the frame using the F circle as usual, but the release lever cannot be pulled until that timer expires.
