Some of the realism in SimSig comes from slowing things down a little. For example, TD stepping in reality doesn't happen straight away because of communications delays.
Playing as a client connected to a server over the Internet gives you the most realistic time delays - things take a second or two to respond, rather than instantaneous.
Route releasing also isn't instant (whether by cancelling a route or the train passing a signal). Again, in reality, it doesn't happen that quickly. So the staggered release of subroutes actually reflects reality, as does the short delays in stepping up signal aspects.
Think yourself lucky you're not in North America where their remote dispatching centres (which can be thousands of miles away) take as much as 30 seconds to request a route because of transmission delays!
