Introduction

Basingstoke signalling centre, located in its namesake town, comprises entrance-exit style panels controlling three separate chunks of railway. This simulation covers one of the panels, that of Basingstoke station, Worting Junction, Andover, the line towards (excluding) Reading, and Farnborough. It can be chained to the Woking simulation and provision has been made for chaining to a possible future Eastleigh simulation and a possible future Reading simulation. Although a Salisbury simulation exists, it needs work to chain correctly to Basingstoke.

Start-Up Options

Scenarios

Easy, Normal, and Hard Modes

As is common with many SimSig simulations, three standard difficulty modes are provided. "Easy" mode includes train describer interposes at sidings that wouldn't normally include such a feature in real life, and has low delay and failure settings. Normal and Hard require manual interpose into some sidings to match real life, and have some delays and failures (Normal) or higher than typical delays and failures (Hard).

Fleet Fast Lines Closure

Work around a closure of the fast lines through Fleet. You'll need to keep a close eye on approaching fast trains to minimise delays overall.

Basingstoke to Worting Junction Slow Lines Closure

Work around a closure of the slow lines between Basingstoke and Worting Junction. While this scenario has a shorter section of track closed, the timetable often has freight trains or empty coaching stock waiting for a faster train to pass. You'll need to work out where else to hold these trains instead.

Eras

The Basingstoke Main simulation is modelled on the current (as of 2024) layout.

Other Options

Bad Weather

Trains will accelerate more slowly and brake earlier due to slippery rails.

Features

Electrification

The main line is electrified with 3rd rail DC from Woking to Winchester and beyond. The Exeter lines beyond Worting Junction, and the Reading lines from Basingstoke to Reading are not electrified.

The Down Yard at Basingstoke is only electrified in the track circuited section visible on screen. The part beyond the stop boards is not electrified.

Automation

As Basingstoke Main panel has no automation in real life, neither does the simulation. This means no ARS and no ACI. Terminating trains must be re-interposed manually with their new train identity.

Panel Notes

There are some double red aspect sequences around Farnborough, Winchfield, and signal BE434. These protect high risk junctions by bringing a train down to a slower speed before releasing to a single yellow aspect, to stop at the next signal which protects the high risk junction. If the junction signal is showing a proceed aspect then the signal preceding it may step up to a less restrictive aspect.

A number of flashing yellow sequences are available. These are generally Fast to Slow line transitions (and vice versa) around Farnborough and Winchfield, Worting Junction towards Andover, and Basingstoke towards Reading.

Basingstoke station has white calling-on exit arrows to explicitly select a calling-on route instead of a main route. They are also used to select a permissive route from a shunt signal instead of a non-permissive route. Note that the platform must have been occupied for a period of time (39s) before a permissive route (shunt or calling-on) is allowed to be set.

The banner repeaters at Basingstoke are all replaced by the far end platform track occupied, with the exception of P4 where the banner repeater follows the signal aspect without track replacement.

In the Down direction, only platform 5 at Basingstoke is permissive, with the exception of moves from Barton Mill, the Dn E End Sdg, and shunt signals BE5105 and BE5106.

The slot at Barton Mill CSD is required for all routes from Basingstoke station. It is not required for the route from BE5107 (Barton Mill E siding). It can be requested by left-clicking on the green circle adjacent to the exit arrow.

Slots are required for all routes into Basingstoke Dn E End Sdg, Up Neck, and Up Branch Sdgs. Each can be requested by left-clicking on the appropriate green circle adjacent to the appropriate exit arrow.

All platforms at Basingstoke have separate TRTS for each direction. Note that not all trains will operate TRTS, particularly when not scheduled to stop as freight trains.

To route into the Down Yard, use signal BE165 or BE411 as the entry and then the stop board as the exit. For trains continuing on to the non-track circuited section of the Down Yard, they will ask for permission to pass the same stop board and will have "Basingstoke Dn Yard (exit)" as a final location in their timetable. Trains entering the simulation from the Down Yard will first phone for permission to enter, and again to pass the other stop board into the track-circuited section of the siding.

Signal BE502 on the Up Reading line is a one-button route (click on entry signal; no need to click on an exit signal).

Timetable Notes

See the notes contained in the timetable (press F4) for timetable-specific notes.

Some things to watch for include:

- Fast line trains stopping at Winchfield or Farnborough

- Trains recessing between Basingstoke and Worting Junction

- Reading Green Park station opened in 2023 and thus timetables before this year will have no trains stopping there

Multiplayer & Chaining

The simulation chains at the following locations:

Simulation Location
Salisbury Laverstock North Jn
Woking Farnborough

Provision exists for the simulation to chain at other fringes, should the corresponding simulation be developed in the future. This includes Eastleigh and Reading.

Timetabling Details

Woking Junction is the entry location for Down trains from the Woking direction. Do not include trains going to/from Guildford via Pirbright Junction. Trains crossing at Brookwood must initially enter from Woking Junction on the line required to approach Farnborough London End junction (eg if a train departs Woking on the slow and crosses to the fast at Brookwood, it must use the Down Fast entry point). Adjust entry timings appropriately to ensure they arrive on time at Farnborough.

Use Southcote Junction as the entry location for Down trains from Reading.

For Up trains from the Micheldever direction, either of two entry points can be used. For trains using Wallers Ash loops, this entry location should be used, and trains will start from a crawl as if they just departed the loops. For all other trains, use Winchester. If a train originates at Micheldever, use Wallers Ash with an earlier time.

Trains from the Salisbury direction may use Laverstock South Junction when coming from that direction, or Up Main (Salisbury Tunnel Junction) for a faster approach from Salisbury station.
