An Interlocking is the name given to the area controlled from one SSI Solid State Interlocking module (which is made up of 3 identical processors, to ensure that failures do not cause the system to go to an unsafe state (Wrong Side Failure)). The SSI is responsible for making sure all points, signal lamps etc. are proving correctly before allowing a change (point change, signal colour change, etc.) to occur. In areas controlled by some signal boxes, the signals are prefixed with the box name (e.g. C) for Cowlairs, followed by a second letter (e.g. E), which denotes the Eastfield Interlocking. However, railways being what they are, some boxes have 2 letters as the box name and do not reference Interlocking areas (e.g. all signals controlled by Warrington PSB are prefixed 'WN').
