TRAINS IN THIS TIMETABLE WHICH DON'T HAVE AN ALLOCATED PLATFORM SHOWN IN THEIR RESPECTED TT DATA IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE SUMMER 1987 DERBY STATION WORKING BOOK DOESN'T SHOW AN ALLOCATED PLATFORM FOR THESE TRAINS. THEREFORE THE USER/SIGNALLER ON CENTRE PANEL MUST USE HIS/HER BEST JUDGEMENT AS TO WHERE TO PUT THE TRAIN WITHOUT CAUSING A DELAY TO OTHER SERVICES BOOKED THROUGH DERBY STATION AT AROUND THE SAME TIME.
Between signals 425 & 428 on the Connect Line you can fit a 6 car Sprinter Unit[120m] between those 2 signals. Anything longer you’d need to set the route from 428 signal to 458 signal [Down Goods] or 503 [Up Goods] to enable the train to get in behind 425 signal. However on the Pilot Line between 457 & 479 signals you can fit a full HST set [220m].
Mantle Lane Sdgs, Coalville is the focal point for all the freight traffic on the Freight Only line between Knighton Junction(Leicester) & Burton Leicester Jn./Branston Jn. There are 9 separate trip workings allocated off Coalville depot on a daily basis. The main traffic is MGR trains loading coal at either Bagworth, Coalfields Farm, Rawdon or Cadley Hill Collieries bound for Didcot, Willington, Rugeley & Drakelow Power Stations. There is a flow of vacuum braked HTN wagons between Coalfields Farm & Lea Hall Colliery which was literally next door to Rugeley Power Station on the Trent Valley line taking coal for blending. This was the last year these trains ran before Lea Hall Colliery was closed. There are 2 opencast site on the Derby sim shown on the panel as Nadins Sdg. & Swains Park Opencast. However back in 1987 Swains Park Opencast was known as Rawdon Colliery & Nadins Opencast was known as Cadley Hill Colliery & as a result of the fact that this timetable is based on the summer of 1987 the locations in the train description fields are shown as either Rawdon Colliery or Cadley Hill Colliery, but the tt locations are shown as Nadins Sdg. Or Swains Park Opencast. Something users running this timetable will get used to. During my time on the Footplayte I worked trains to Mantle Lane Sdgs & usually the MGR trains bound for Bagworth or Coalfields Farm collieries would enter the sim via ML24 entry point. All other traffic non MGR would enter the sim via ML14. There is a trip working from Mantle Lane Sdgs to Marcrofts Wagon Shops at Mantle Lane & that can be signalled out to the Wagon Shops, but the return working of it can’t be signalled back as that track is off sim. But it doesn’t affect the running of the timetable.
When the empties return from Lea Hall Colliery during the evening time they get shunted into Coalville Up Sdgs where there’s approx. 3 roads to hold wagon sets. When the locos come back out to go to Coalville HS you need to signal them to Coalfields Farm Colliery where the locos can reverse behind ML125 signal.
Another thing to be wary about at Mantle Lane is that some of the MGR trains are booked to stand on the Down Goods Loop. Users need to read the TT data for trains very carefully because if you send a train that is booked to stand for any length of time on the DG then it will block the line completely & anything else that enters from either Coalfields Farm Colliery or Bardon hill will be stuck behind as the train that should have been signalled into the DG blocks the points allowing you to send the train in rear via the DG which will cause significant late running & there isn’t any opportunity to claw back the time for those trains on the sim, so you have been warned. Trains bound for Rugeley Power Station or Lea Hall Colliery exit the sim via Litchfield Trent Valley Low Level & also re-enter there too.
There are a couple of light loco movements to & from Coalville HS which are moves for locos to be fuelled or swapped out for repairs, maintenance or exam at either Toton TMD & Leicester LIP. Light loco moves during this time could convey 5 locos together max unlike more modern eras like today.
Mantle Lane starts gearing up in the number of trains in & out at Mantle Lane TC after 7G27 04.57 SX MGR Mantle Lane TC to Rugeley CEGB & stays fairly constant throughout the day until around 19.30ish when things start to quieten down.
Derby Technical Centre is where test trains run to & from. It also has its own pilot loco there all week T.88 which you will see several times in this timetable dragging out test trains onto the Goods Lines whereby the pilot detaches off & the test train departs to wherever it is going that day & T.88 returns back to the Research Sdgs. There are quite a lot of test trains in this timetable which enter the sim on various days of the week conducting specific test. Information about each train is shown when the user clicks on the trains ID. When the test train arrives back at Derby the loco is at the wrong end of the train & in most cases T.88 pilot comes off the Research Sdgs to couple onto the rear of the train & drag it all back into the Research Sdgs. The engine off the test train then re-enters & goes to Derby No.4 Shed. The same happens in the morning in reverse where the l;oco working the test train comes off Derby No.4 Shed & runs LD to the Research Sdgs.
There are a myriad of shunt pilot locos working in & around Derby station in this timetable. All of them have a max speed of 15mph except one. The list below tell you about the pilots & where they work below:-
T.08 St. Marys Yard. This pilot goes out LD from Derby No.4 Shed at 05.50 Monday & remains at the yard pilot at St. Marys Yard all week before returning to Derby No.4 Shed on Saturday mornings. This pilot you will see several times coming out & St. Marys Yard running onto the Up Dep. Sdg. Before going back into St. Marys Yard conveying various lengths of wagons. It is book to shunt continuously between 06.00 MO to 06.00 SO.
T.09 Derby Local Area pilot. This pilot runs SX & comes off Derby No.4 shed at07.30 to St. Marys Yard. This pilot covers a wide variety of shunt trips to pretty much every location around Derby station. It has coupled with it a brake van for staff to operate the various GF it encounters on its trips. This pilot goes to Litchurch Lane Carriage Works, Bottom Yard[which is within Derby Locomotive Works & is off sim], Etches Park CS, Chaddesden Sdgs., Atlas Sdg., [same location as the S&T Sdg.], Slum Sdg. & Thomas Hill. This pilot also goes to Rolls Royce at Sinfin to drop off loaded tanks wagons of Kerosene & later in the day returns to collect the discharged tanks.{Beware of this move as it picks up the traffic in the S&T Sdg., first & then goes into the loop between Sinfin North & Sinfin Central to drop those wagons before heading off to the Rolls Royce Sdg to collect the discharged tanks & propel them onto the wagons it dropped off a few minutes earlier. Once the wagons have joined the pilot & brake van run round & haul both sets of wagons back to Derby St. Marys Yard. Note all 3 GFs on the Sinfin Branch will be required to complete this move. This pilot returns to Derby No.4 Shed at 22.10 from St. Marys Yard.
T.10 Derby Station West End. This pilot generally spends most of its time off sim in the South Dock Sdgs., but does go to Etches Park CS a couple of times a day to help out shunting in the carriage sdgs.
T.11 Derby Station North End pilot again like the previous pilot is mainly off sim in the North Dock Sdgs., but does do some shunting at the north end of the station. This pilot enters the sim shortly after midnight to carry out its first task.
T.12 Derby Station & Etches Park CSpilot. This pilot carries out most of the shunting between Etches Park CS to Derby Station & visa versa. This pilot comes off Derby No.4 Shed & goes into Etches Park CS on Monday mornings where it is booked to shunt as required.
T.83, T.84 & T.85 are all Derby Carriage & Wagon Works pilots. Both T.84 & T.85 pilots come off Derby No.4 Shed coupled together at 07.00 & work in Litchurch Lane all week before returning back to Derby No.4 Shed on Fridays this time there are 3 pilots all coupled together including T.83 pilot which comes off Derby No.4 Shed at 1120 on Mondays.
T.86 DerbyLoco New Shops pilot. This pilot comes off Derby No.4 Shed at 0740 Monmdays& stays there until it returns on Fridays arriving back at Derby No.4 Shed at 1320.
T.87 Derby Loco New Shops pilot. This one works in the same place as T.86, but enters at Derby No.4 Shed at 0925 Mondays & returns coupled to T.86 on Fridays.
T.88 Derby Technical Centre pilot. This pilot comes off Derby No.4 Shed at 0725 on Mondays& stays in the Technical Centre all week before returning to Derby No.4 Shed on Fridays at 1700. This pilot is primarily involved with any shunting required within Derby RTC[off sim] & also hauls test train out & in as required.
T.89Engineer’s Ballast pilot. Unlike all the others listed above this one is the except I mentioned earlier as it is worked by a main line loco Cl.20. This comes out of Derby No.4 Shed very morning at 0715 & shunts as required Chaddesden Ballast Sdgs., & Set Tip Sdgs[off sim]. Shunt & trip ballast trains as required. This loco returns back to Derby No.4 Shed at around 1440 each day.
Burton MGR Depot pilot. This pilot works daily there & occasionally will come out taking wagons to or from Burton West Yard between 1015 & 1740.
During this period there were a number of prototype Sprinter builds in this timetable:
Cl.151 Metro-Cammell 3 car
Cl.154 BREL Super Sprinter 3 car
These train work passenger services mainly on the Matlock branch & also between Nottingham & Birmingham New Street. They also cover a daily milage accumulation test run between Etches Park CS & Cricklewood & return. These trains too are included in this TT. 1C40 & 1P40, these 2 workings have all the sets coupled together as a 12 car & is 240m long, so remember what I’ve said about the Pilot Line & Connect Line at Derby where these trains are booked to go.
When 9P01 departs from Derby P1, it is tt’d to reverse behind DY435 signal & run into the Station CS. Once there it awaits 3 Post Office vans to be detached off 5E05/$5E050511 which is a shunt from Derby P1 off 1E05 into the Station CS via Derby Station North Jn(463) signal. Once in the Station CS 5E05 detaches the 3 Postal vehicles & return to join the rest of its train in P1 loco+BG. 9E05/$9E05DETMX awaits for 9P01 to join it. Users of this TT please note that the vehicles are literally buffered up together, so if the join doesn’t initiate almost straight away, then users need to get 9P01 to shunt forward to initiate both 9P01 & 9E05 to join. As per the note on the ‘misc’ tab of 9P01 tt data.
