Acknowledgements

To all my colleagues in the signalling department, thank you for putting up with all of my questions. To my testing team who has helped me immensely in getting to this stage - thank you, I don’t think I’d be here without you. Finally to Geoff Mayo, and the others too numerous to name that have brought SimSig this far - Thank You!

Overview

The latest version of the Llangollen simulation represents the railway as it was on the 22nd of October 2014. The extension to Corwen East has just seen its first ever train of paying passengers, marking the end of a 39 year journey to restore the railway line between Llangollen and Corwen

Within the simulation are five different workstations:

• Llangollen Station

• Llangollen Goods Junction

• Deeside Loop

• Glyndyfrdwy

• Carrog

Each of which represents one of the lines five signal boxes.

Features

Three ground frames, lots of single line track, and a nice small layout to break new players into the world of SimSig.

There is also the ability to manually control the distant signals at Deeside.

Scenarios and Options

Scenarios

Perfect: No delays and no failures - perfect for the new player.

Beginner: Normal running, no lines or platforms closed. No trackside failures but limited delays and disturbances.

Standard: Normal running, no lines or platforms closed. Limited temporary speed restrictions, trackside failures, delays, and disturbances.

Hard: Normal running, no lines or platforms closed. Temporary speed restrictions, trackside failures, delays, and disturbances.

Options

There is only one option to chose from, and that is whether TORR (Train Operated Route Release) is on or off. The default is for it to be switched off.

Work Station Specifics

Llangollen Station

Llangollen station as the name suggest is the workstation which controls the area around the main station on the line. Almost all of the trains start their first trip of the day, and end there last of the day here.

The station itself has two platforms, with two headshunts at the up end (Left end). These can be used to allow locomotives to run round there trains, or to store an extra coach.

Llangollen Goods Junction

The first passing loop on the line, as well as the access to the railways locomotive and carriage sheds make this workstation rather busy during the early and late parts of the day.

Goods Junction consists of a passing loop. It is used to pass trains during the busier timetables and galas. Access to Pentrefelin Yard (Carriage shed), and the loco shed, via the “back road”. The back road is accessed either by reversing through River Siding, or via Pentrefelin Ground Frame.

In reality River Siding is used to store rakes of coaches.

To route a train from Goods Junction to Pentrefelin Ground Frame they should be routed to Signal PF6.

Deeside

Deeside Loop lies almost dead centre on the line, most trains cross here during the day. A short siding is accessible from the “Up Loop”, this is used to store spare coaching stock or engineering wagons.

The two distant signals can be cleared to green when both of the stop signals are cleared to green. This is done by pressing the green roundel next to the relevant signal. Note DE1 can never be cleared if a train is routed into the UP Loop as the signal is approach released.

Glyndyfrdwy

Glyndyfrdwy was the terminus of the line until 1996 when the then “new” extension opened to Carrog. It features the lines only manned level crossing just outside of the station. At the Up end of the station (left side) lies a set of three sidings. These are accessed via New Inn GF. Some artistic license has been used here in order to allow the sidings to work in SimSig, the groundframe is not as complicated in the flesh.

The points at either end of the loop are sprung points, and therefore self-normalize on the sim.

There is no route to Gl12 signal from the Llangollen end, nor a route to GL8 from the Carrog end. Due to the points being sprung in real life. GL8 can be used to turn trains back towards Llangollen.

Carrog

Carrog lost it's status as the western terminus of the line in October 2014, when Corwen East station was opened. However for the time being with the lack of run round facilities at Corwen East, Carrog will continue to be a key feature of the lines operations.

Carrog station has two sidings which are used to store various items of rolling stock. To the Corwen end is Carrog Engineers Siding, used to store engineering wagons used on the railway. It is accessed via a ground frame.

To allow backward compatibility the previous limit of operations to a stop board near Bonwm halt has been retained in the sim as a timing point, and is marked as "Former site of Bonwm stop board", a timing point has also been added just short of Corwen East on Colomendy curve, this was used for the termination of various trains before Corwen East opened.

It is not possible to access the engineers siding whilst the section to Corwen East is occupied.

Level Crossings

There is only one level crossing on the sim. This is just outside of Glyndyfrdwy. No routes can be set over the crossing until the barriers have been lowered and the crossing proved clear, by pressing the clear button.

Multiplayer and Chaining

The sim can be played in multiplayer although it is designed more for single player.

There is no other simulation to chain to, and probably never will be.
