Timetable Notes

Both the supplied timetables have three start times to match Cardiff PSB, Cardiff Valleys & Cardiff VoG.

The 8th April 0000 & 0400 starts feature a rolling engineering possesion at the start of the session on the Up Relief Lines; between Maindee East Jcn & Llanwern West Jcn. Special care needs to be exercised in the running of these services, please see the notes / instructions that appear in the timetable window. Not all down services had thier line codes altered by Network Rail from the relief lines, this is how the data was supplied and not an error.

Overview

This sim covers the area of Newport PSB (Now closed), East Usk signalbox (Now Closed), and Park Junction signalbox.

You are in control of the South Wales Main Line from Awre; just outside of Gloucester, where this simulation fringes to Gloucester, through Severn Tunnel Junction; where the "branch" from Bristol (fringe) joins the mainline, past Llanwern works, the East Usk branch and yard, to Maindee East Junction; where the line diverges towards Hereford (fringe), past Maindee West Junction where the line from Hereford joins the Main Line, through Newport Station, past Gaer Junction; where the line diverges towards Park Junction, Newport Alexandra Dock Junction; an important freight yard, and Ebbw Junction where the line from Park Junction joins the Main Line.

You are in control of the Ebbw Vale Branch from Park Junction, where the triangular junction from the mainline converges, past the Machen Quarry branch, through to the terminus at Ebbw Vale Parkway.

You are in control of the East Usk reception lines, access to and from the yard and sidings at Eask Usk, as well as the East Usk branch, and the connections to and from the Main Line.

Use Of Welsh Language

During the creation of the Wales & Borders series the use of the Welsh langauge has been a source of much fun and enjoyment. I have tried to use the English version of place names throughout the simulation, sometimes due to the fact I speak the Welsh language, and have lived in Wales most of my life a Welsh version of a place names "slips through the net" especially in cases where it is hard for the testing team to spot the difference (eg English - Treforest / Welsh - Trefforest).

Features

Auto Buttons

On this design of panel, auto buttons applied to multiple signals. For example, it's not possible to set 407 and 409 into auto mode at Cogan, but not 405- while the auto button can be pressed with a route set from 407 and 409 only, as soon as a route is set from 405, that will also work in auto mode until cancelled.

Options

Train Operated Route Release (TORR)

There are two TORR options, On and Off.

'Off' is the most realistic as no parts of the simulation where fitted with TORR in real life; however 'On' reduces your workload

Overlap Display

On E10K panels overlaps are not displayed, however points are still locked in them. By default overlaps will not be shown, you can turn them on with this option. Park Junction SSI is not an E10K interlocking and will show overlaps regardless.

Scale of Problems

Choose the scale of train delays and infrastructure failures. The normal SimSig options of “None”, “Low”, “Medium” and “High” are available. Select which one you wish to play from the drop-down menu.

Workstation Overview

Severn Tunnel

Operational notes:

Lydney Interlocking (Prefix LY)
  • Lydney Goods Loops are

    permissive .

  • Lydney crossing is controlled by the

crossing keeper at Lydney crossing box. (See concessions section)

  • LY1 signal is controlled by Lyndey Ground Frame
  • Release 927 controls Lydney

    Ground Frame .

Chepstow Interlocking (Prefix C)
  • Release 929 controls Wye Valley Ground Frame.
  • Release 933 controls Chepstow West Ground Frame; Siding access.
  • Release 934 controls Chepstow West Ground Frame; Crossover.
Caldicot Interlocking (Prefix K)
  • Release 937 controls Caldicot Ground Frame; Caerwent Branch access.
  • Release 938 controls Caldicot Ground Frame; Crossover.
  • Release 939 controls Caldicot Ground Frame; Sudbrook Branch access.
  • The lines to Caerwent and Sudbrook are controlled under the C2 system. You are responsible for ensuring only one train is on the single line section at any one time.
  • Caldicot Crossing was controlled by a crossing keeper, at Caldicot crossing box. (The crossing box is not simulated and signals will clear straight to a proceed aspect.).
  • Trains requiring to access the Caerwent Branch approaching from Caldicot must only be signalled as far as K3 signal. (Drivers routed to UM146 will advise you an incorrect route has been set).
Seven Tunnel East Interlocking (Prefix E)
  • The bi-directional working between Patchway and Severn Tunnel East was never commissioned. Signal 264 however was commissioned and can be used to reverse behind for trains heading towards Patchway.
  • In order for trains to approach from Patchway on the Down Tunnel line you must grant 162 slot by setting a route from it. The signal head will go white when the slot is given. The points at the exit of Pilning DGL must be Normal (i.e. set for the main line) before the slot can be granted.
  • Giving 162 slot will lock the facing points ahead of 164 signal in whichever direction they're set at the time.
  • No slot is required for trains to approach on the Down Goods loop.
  • When lit the three white lights on the Down Tunnel and Down Goods lines advise you that replacing 162 slot, 164 signal, or 562 signal will cause an adverse change of aspect to an approaching train.
  • The bi-directional working towards Severn Tunnel Junction is strictly for use during engineering work, or failures.
  • The emergency signals within the Severn Tunnel are normally extinguished, no control is provided in the simulation to activate them.
  • 287R is restricted from showing a green aspect in the interlocking.
  • In order for Bristol to let a train out of Pilning Up Goods loop no route should be set towards Bristol 101 signal.
Seven Tunnel Junction Interlocking (Prefix J)
  • Release 643 controls Severn Tunnel Junction East Ground Frame.
  • The bi-directional working towards Severn Tunnel East is strictly for use during engineering work, or failures.
  • Signal 170 has two routes to signal 196, either via platform 1 (preferred) or platform 3, 655 points must be

keyed reverse to guarantee that the platform 3 route will be selected by the interlocking.

  • The cripple siding is strictly not for use as a through line and should only be used for trains which are specifically timetabled, or which have activated a Wheelchex device or a Hot Axle Box Detector.
  • Points 683 have been partially plain lined but are maintained in the interlocking, as such they are shown keyed normal with a

reminder appliance applied. It is not recommended to remove these appliances, or to attempt to key the points reverse, they will not be able to detect in the reverse position, and you will be rewarded with a fifty point penalty for trying to move them. Any attempt to force a train over this crossover will not be possible. The train will stop on the previous track circuit, and you will get a message and phone call that the train is at buffer stops.

Magor

Operational notes:

Bishton Interlocking (Prefix S)
  • Bishton Crossing is controlled by the crossing keeper at Bishton crossing box. The gates are kept normally closed to road traffic, the Bishton Crossing Keeper will advise you by telephone when he has a vehicle requiring use of the crossing.
  • Release 695 controls Bishton Crossing Ground Frame. The Crossing Keeper at Bishton Crossing will deal with the ground frame controls once this release is granted.
  • Signals across Bisthon Crossing can be left on automatic.
  • The works access lines at Steel Works East are under control of the Llanwern Works Person in Charge.
  • The Person in charge will phone you for permission before allowing a train to approach 501 signal.
  • Before setting a route towards LWS1 Stop Board you must telephone the Llanwern Works Person in Charge for permission. The Person in Charge or his representative will authorise the train to pass LWS1 Stop Board.
  • The Up Main & Up Relief lines are fitted with Hot Box Detectors. If the Hot Box Detector activates the roundel will flash, this must be acknowledged and the train dealt with accordingly.
East Usk Interlocking (Prefix U)
  • In order for signal 337 to clear towards signal 339, 703 points must be normal, or either EUBF or EUBG track circuits must be occupied. Reversing 703 points after 337 signal clears may cause an adverse change of aspect!
  • Signal DR156 has a delayed yellow aspect automatically selected if the full overlap is not available.
  • The points between you and East Usk Signalbox are

slotted . In order to send a train to east usk the TD of the train should be interposed into the "Send TD" berth, and the appropriate request slot clicked. East Usk will then grant the slot at his end.

  • When East Usk wishes to send a train towards you the TD of the train will appear in the berth below the East Usk label, and the appropriate acceptance slot(s) will begin to flash. Once you grant the appropriate slot East Usk can set the route towards you.
  • Trains booked to East Usk Down Sidings will exit the simulation when sent onto the Number 2 reception line, trains booked for the reception lines will remain in the sim.
  • A phone call is required to the East Usk Down Sidings PIC for trains booked to the down sidings.
Maindee Main Interlocking (Prefix M)
  • Signal 218 will not clear to a proceed aspect if 706 points (the crossover from Down Main to Up Relief immediately before it) are reverse, unless it's berth track circuit is occupied.
  • Signal 133 is One Button Clearance.
Maindee North Interlocking (Prefix L)
  • Signal L10 has a wrong direction move on the Up Hereford Loop for attaching purposes only, Track circuit (MM)FF has to be occupied for 43 seconds before this route can be set.

Station

Operational notes:

  • It should be understood that references to ADJ, and Newport ADJ are referring to Alexandra Dock Junction.
  • Trains destined for Wentloog Freightliner Terminal MUST be correctly routed at Ebbw Junction onto the Down Relief line. Failure to do so will prevent them from arriving at their destination. This instruction should be followed at all times, but is essential when

    chained to Cardiff!

Newport East Interlocking (Prefix E)
  • All platforms at Newport are fitted with

    TRTS .

  • The shunt route from Signal N127 to the white arrow of Signal N129 goes via the Down Main.
  • There are two possible main aspect routes from Signal N227 to Signal N129. The preferred route that the sim will select if available is via points 754 reverse, and straight along the Up Main. If this route is unavailable then the interlocking may select the alternative wrong-direction along the Down Main and then over 745 points reverse.
  • There are two possible main aspect routes and two possible shunt aspect routes from Signal N327 to Signal N129. The preferred route that the sim will select if available is via points 750 reverse, and straight along the Up Main. If this route is unavailable then the interlocking may select the alternative route via 746 and 745 points reverse.
  • There are no main aspect routes from Signals N327 or N627 to Signal N229, only a shunt aspect is obtainable by clicking the white arrow.
  • When routed to Signal N329, Signal N327 will approach release from red if either points 771 or 775 at Newport West are not normal.
  • There are two possible main aspect routes and two possible shunt aspect routes from Signal N527 to Signal N129. The preferred route that the sim will select if available is along the Down Main then via points 745 reverse, If this route is unavailable then the interlocking may select the alternative route via 751 and 750 points reverse.
  • When routed to Signals N129, N229 and N329, Signal N527 will approach release from red if points 772 at Newport West are not normal.
Newport West Interlocking (Prefix W)
  • Signal W8 will only clear if points 768, 769 and 772 are Normal.
  • To set a route from Signal N223 to Signal W7, either points 771 need to be Normal, or points 767 reverse.
  • In order to reverse 769 points to access the Parcels road you require "P769 Shunters Release" to be given. You must phone the shunter and ask his permission to send the train, the slot will light. Once you are finished with the slot you should ring the shunter back and cancel permission.
  • You will only be able to clear signal W5 if you have asked permission from the person in charge of the Parcels dock and he or she has granted the slot.
Gaer Interlocking (Prefix G)
  • Signal 436 will only ever show single yellow for routes to B10.
  • Signal G1 is a two-aspect signal, Red/Yellow.
  • Signal 115 will only show single yellow with routes towards Signals 219 or 319 until Track Circuit (G)DD has been occupied for 6 seconds, after which it can step up to double yellow and green as appropriate.
Ebbw Junction Interlocking (Prefix B)
  • ADJ S440 location is a crew relieving point for freight trains. Any train booked here MUST be routed to this signal.
  • If the Up and Down Goods line is occupied by a train, a timeout of 42 seconds applies before a route can be set from B5 or B9 signal.
  • In order to set a route from B11 or 111 to B5 the overlap of 440 signal must have timed out.
  • If you replace O15 slot whilst Park Junction has a route set from PJ81 signal white route lights will remain on the combined indication of Tracks GP & GN until such a time as Park Junction cancels his route.
  • Call on routes into the Up and Down Goods require Track Circuit GH to be occupied for signals N111 or N311 to clear. The state of Track Circuit GJ is irrelevant.
  • There are no direct routes from S111, or S311 into ADJ Through Sidings, you need to set shunt to shunt.
  • 638 slot slots Park Junction 16 signal, grant the slot by setting a route from the signal. The overlap on 640 signal will illuminate but the main route will not.
  • A slot is required to set a route towards the LOS on the Down Cardiff Curve.

Park Junction

Operational notes:

Mechanical
  • In order for PJ81 signal to clear Station panel must give NO15 slot.
  • In order for PJ16 signal to clear Station panel must give N638 slot.
  • In order to set a route from PJ9 onto the Gaer Branch Newport must give N515 slot.
  • In order for Station workstation to send a train towards you on the Gaer Branch you must give PJ85 Slot.
  • PJ85 slot requires 30 points normal or free, and 27 points reverse or free. Granting the slot will move and lock these points in those positions.
  • In order for Station workstation to send a train up to the Cardiff Curve LOS you must give PJ15 Slot.
  • The line to Machen Quarry is worked as a single line with a train staff.

Multiplayer and Chaining

The sim is manageable by one person on the standard timetable running at 1:1 speed.

Newport currently chains to Cardiff, and Hereford. It will not chain to the .exe version of Bristol and Gloucester, it is compatible with future updates to these simulations.

Concessions

* Accurate information on the working of the Machen Quarry train staff, particularly the ability to move the staff by road, has not been obtainable. As such the train staff is not currently simulated.

* Accurate information on the working of the East Usk Branch train staff has not been obtainable. As such the train staff is not currently simulated.

* Lydney CCTV crossing is controlled by a crossing keeper at the former Lydney signalbox, pending an update to the Gloucester simulation the gate box is not simualated and the signals over the crossing will clear straight to a proceed aspect. A gatebox feature will be available in a later update.
