Schematic map

Birmingham Area Map

- A schematic showing main and link lines in the Birmingham area.

Line Speeds

These speeds are in general and there may be restrictions for short distances at various places, particularly over pointwork.

  • Coventry to Grand Junction: 100mph
  • Grand Junction to New Street: 25mph for freights; 45mph for passenger trains; 20mph/30mph through the tunnels; 10mph throughout New Street station.
  • St. Andrews Junction to Grand Junction: 15mph to 25mph.
  • Stechford to Aston: 45mph
  • Proof House Junction to Aston: 50-70mph.
  • Aston to Four Oaks: 50mph.
  • Aston to Hamstead: 75mph.
  • Perry Barr to Soho: 45mph.
  • New Street to Soho: 40mph in the tunnels, then 65mph.
  • Soho to Wolverhampton: 75mph.

Gradients

Most of the area does not suffer from severe gradients except as follows:

  • Duddeston to Proof House Junction involves going over a bridge over the Up Stour line (both eras) and the Down Stour line (2009 era).
  • Landor Street Junction to Grand Junction is on a short, steep, rising gradient taking the line from underneath the Stour Lines to the same level as the Stour and Camp Hill lines.
  • Proof House Junction down New Street is graded steeply downhill at varying degrees of steepness. Trains will cautiously approach signals NS151 and NS154 if the driver is expecting them to show stop.
  • There is a steep incline out of New Street to Monument Lane where the gradient is more gentle as far as Soho. From there to Wolverhampton the line variously ascends and descends with nothing too steep until beyond Dudley Port.
  • Out of New Street to Five Ways involves a steep gradient, after which the line rises and falls variously but not very steeply.
