Overview
The North Wales Coast simulation covers the North Wales Coast line from Holyhead to Rockcliffe Hall where there is a fringe with Chester Power Signal Box at Saltney Junction, and the branches to Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog.
The area is mostly double track, with a short single track section over the Britannia Bridge. The Blaenau Ffestiniog branch is single track throughout, with a short passing loop at North Llanrwst Station. There are nine ground frames within the simulated area.
The simulation is based on information around 2005 to the present day.
The simulation consists of sixteen signal boxes, which are represented as individual workstations:
- Holyhead
- Valley
- Gaerwen
- Bangor
- Penmaenmawr
- Llandudno Junction
- Llandudno
- Deganwy
- Abergele
- Rhyl
- Prestatyn
- Talacre
- Mostyn
- Holywell Junction
- Rockcliffe Hall
- Llanrwst
Geographically, North on the panel is up, East right, South down and West left.
Features
Absolute Block
Details on how to operate the Absolute Block system can be found in the separate Absolute Block manual .
Llandudno Junction to Llanrwst (Electric Key Token)
The section from Llandudno Junction to Llanrwst Signal Box (situated at North Llanrwst Station) is controlled in real life by Electric Train Token, but in SimSig North Wales Coast by a modified version of the Absolute Block system described above.
Above each TOL indication is an arrow which will change direction to show which direction trains are locked into the system.
It is necessary for all trains to be offered on this single line – no acceptance is possible without an offer first being received.
North Llanrwst - Blaenau Ffestiniog No Signalman Key Token
The section of line from Signal LT3 at North Llanrwst through to the buffer stops beyond Blaenau Ffestiniog is controlled by the No Signaler Key Token system (NSKT). Only one token can be released at a time to allow a train to traverse this section of line.
The system is controlled by the token instrument located on the screen next to North Llanrwst.
North Llanrwst - Blaenau Ffestiniog
A token can be issued to a train at North Llanrwst by left clicking the "release token" button. If you wish to return the token to the instrument right click the "release token" button (You must have replaced LT3 to danger before you can replace the token).
When the token is released the red "Train Going To" light will illuminate. This will give a release on signal LT3 allowing a route to be set towards Blaenau Ffestiniog.
The token can be released in advance of the train arriving at North Llanrwst.
Blaenau Ffestiniog - North Llanrwst
If the train is not booked to lock inside at Blaenau Ffestiniog it will not return the token to the instrument at Blaenau Ffestiniog, it will simply return towards North Llanrwst once it is ready.
Note: The indication on the token instrument will remain at "Train Going To" this is true to real life.
When the train returns and either stops at, or passes through the platform at North Llanrwst the token will automatically be restored to the instrument, returning it to it's original state.
Locking Inside at Blaenau Ffestiniog
If a train is booked to stand in the loop at Blaenau Ffestiniog, it will depart to the reversing point at either Number 2, or Number 3 ground frame, the ground frames will then need to be operated as normal (Only one frame can be released at a time, as they are released by the token). Once the train has come to a stand in the loop, and the ground frame has been locked, you will receive a telephone call from "Blaenau Ffestiniog Token Hut", the caller will ask your permission to restore the token to the instrument. When you press OK the token instrument will return to it's original state.
When a the train is ready to depart from the loop at Blaenau Ffestiniog, the TRTS roundel will begin to flash, and a telephone call will be received asking for permission to remove a token from the instrument. When you press OK the green "Train Coming From" light will illuminate. The relevant ground frame(s) can then be operated to release the train onto the single line.
When the train returns and either stops at, or passes through the platform at North Llanrwst the token will automatically be restored to the instrument, returning it to it's original state.

Options
At startup, there are the following options:
Train Operated Route Release (TORR)
This can be turned on or off. The default is TORR enabled. Turning off TORR does not affect Llandudno Junction workstation, as this is an NX panel in reality. To turn off TORR, untick the box on the options screen.
Scale of Problems
Choose the scale of train delays and infrastructure failures. The normal SimSig options of “None”, “Low”, “Medium” and “High” are available. Select which one you wish to play from the drop-down menu.
Absolute Block
Details on how to operate the Absolute Block system can be found in the separate Absolute Block manual .
Workstation Specifics:
Holyhead
- The panel is made up of a mixture of colour light and semaphore signals.
- HD23, HD35, HD38, HD39, HD86, and HD95 are all two aspect signals.
- Care should be taken in routing trains booked to run round using the platform ground frames into the correct platform.
- Anglesey Aluminum requires a phone call to request the slot to allow trains to enter.
- Holyhead Fuel Point requires a phone call to request the slot to allow trains to enter. The shunter will call you requesting permission to allow a train to enter the sim.
- Trains booked to reverse at HD113 will accept the route to reverse behind HD113 or HD91.
- Trains booked to reverse at HD91 will only accept a route to reverse behind HD91.
- TRTS is fitted to all platforms.
- The subsidiary aspects on HD100 and HD101 are operated from the relevant platform ground frames.
- HD41 acts as a distant for Valley signal box, it will only clear to a green if all of Valleys signals on the Down Main are clear.
- VY7 acts as the distant for Holyhead, returning HD115 to danger will cause a change of aspect on VY7 signal.
Valley
- The signals on the Up line are mechanical two aspects signals.
- The signals on the Down line are colour light.
- VY7 acts as Holyheads distant, it will not clear to green unless HD115 is showing a proceed aspect.
- The line to Valley Triangle serves the loading facility for materials from Wylfa Nuclear Power Station.
- Valley level crossing must be lowered and cleared before any routes can be set.
- Valley level crossing is fitted with a train approaching alarm for down direction trains.
- Before a train can be accepted from either Holyhead or Gaerwen, points VY17 must be in the normal position.
- Signal HD41 acts as the distant signal for Valley on the Up line, it will clear to green once all your Up signals are clear.
- There is a phone call facility to test the telephones to the RAF control tower. This is purely a feature and has no impact on the signalling system. The box instructions state that the telephone should be tested once per day.
=Gaerwen
- All of the stop signals are semaphore and are therefore two aspect.
- GN20 and GN3 will automatically clear to green when the relevant signals are cleared.
- Gaerwen level crossing must be lowered and cleared before any routes can be set across it.
- Gaerwen level crossing is fitted with train approaching alarms in both directions.
- Points GN8 must be normal before a train can be accepted from Bangor.
- Points GN14 must be normal before a train can be accepted from Valley.
=Bangor
- Llanfairpwll crossing is controlled by a crossing keeper with slots to Bangor, in the sim you have direct control over the level crossing.
- The single line section over Britania Bridge is approximately a mile long.
- Train out of section can be given to Gaerwen once the train has passed the overlap of BR59 signal.
- Both platforms at Bangor are permissive.
- The subsidary aspect on BR49 allows a train to proceed as far as the "Limit of Shunt Authority board".
- Routes from BR32 to the Limit of Shunt on the Down Main require the use of via buttons "M" or "L".
- A tail lamp telephone is provided in the down direction.
- Signal BRSAL in Bangor Tunnel is a limit of shunt board that only applies for the shunt route from BR49. When the full route to Penmaenmawr is set, the board will turn white to symbolise that it does not apply to through trains.
Penmaenmawr
- All signals are colour light.
- PR2R and PR24R will not clear until all signals on their respective lines are showing a green aspect.
- Signals PR6 and PR25 are intermediate Block Home Signals which protect Aber EGF.
- Out of section can be given before has passed this signalbox on the Up Road once the overlap track circuit for PR25 is clear.
- Aber EGF can be used, but it is not possible to timetable trains to use it.
- A phone call is required to the ballast quarry in order to request the slot.
Llandudno Junction
- The major junction on the North Wales Coast Line, Llandudno Junction is where the branch lines diverge to Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog.
- Llandudno Junction is an NX panel rather than a lever frame. All signals are colour lights, with a mixture of 1-, 2-, 3- 4-aspect in use.
- Signal LJ75 acts as the Down Distant for Deganwy, which will clear to a green aspect when DY17 is cleared.
- You can give “Out of Section” to Penmaenmawr once an Up Train has passed the overlap track circuit of LJ76 signal as the section is track circuited throughout.
- You can give “Out of Section” to Abergele once a Down Train has passed the overlap track circuit of LJ49 signal as the section is track circuited throughout.
- The Up Main is bi-directional between Llandudno Junction and Conwy, but any train heading in the Down Direction on the Up Main will have to come back to Llandudno Junction again, signal LJ68 at Conwy is a 1-aspect signal, showing red only.
- All platforms at Llandudno Junction station are bi-directional. Platform 2 is a west-facing bay and permissive. Platform 1 is permissive in the Up direction only. Platforms 3 and 4 are not permissive.
- TRTS is fitted to all platforms at Llandudno Junction Station, for both Up and Down directions.
- Trains access the Tamper Siding by means of a ground frame, which grants a slot on LJ253 Signal for access to the siding.
- Llysfaen Emergency Ground Frame can be released and operated in the usual SimSig manner, however it is not possible to timetable trains to use it. They will have to be controlled manually with abandoned timetables and manual reverses via the Train List.
- Llandudno Junction works Absolute Block to Penmaenmawr and Abergele Signal Boxes on Both Up and Down Main Lines, Absolute Block to Deganwy on both Up and Down Llandudno lines, and Single Line Block to Llanrwst on the Blaenau Ffestiniog Branch.
- A tail lamp telephone is provided in the down direction at Colwyn Bay Station.
- Be careful setting routes on this workstation too early - there is no comprehensive approach locking, and the timeouts are long.
Abergele
- Abergele is one of the simpler panels on this simulation, with a passing loop on the Down side. All trains booked to call at Abergele and Pensarn have to be signalled through the loop.
- All stop signals at Abergele are semaphore, and will clear to a green irrespective of the aspect of the next signal.
- Distant signals AE1 and AE60 will automatically clear to a green aspect when all other signals applicable to them are also green.
- Abergele works Absolute Block to Llandudno Junction and Rhyl on both Up and Down Main Lines.
Rhyl
- Rhyl is one of the more significant stations on the North Wales Coast, although its signalling system is not too complex. In addition to the main lines, there is a Down Passenger Loop and the CE Sidings.
- All Down trains calling at Rhyl and continuing towards Abergele need to be signalled into the Down Passenger Loop. Any Down train terminating at Rhyl to return in the Chester direction needs to be routed to the Up Platform. If you signal a Down terminating train into the Down Platform, it will accept the route but will then not be able to take up its next working due to no route back to the Up Main.
- Signals RL5, RL11 and RL88 are semaphore signals and will clear directly to a green irrespective of the aspect of the next signal.
- Distant signals RL1 and RL90 will automatically clear to a green aspect when all other signals applicable to them are also green.
- Rhyl works Absolute Block to Abergele and Prestatyn on both Up and Down Main Lines.
- There is a tail lamp telephone provided in the Up direction.
Prestatyn
- The simplest panel on the North Wales Coast, Prestatyn has no points under its control.
- All stop signals at Prestatyn are semaphore signals and will clear directly to a green irrespective of the aspect of the next signal.
- Distant signals PN14 and PN26 will automatically clear to a green aspect when all other signals applicable to them are also green.
- Prestatyn works Absolute Block to Rhyl and Talacre on both Up and Down Main Lines.
Talacre
- Talacre is a former station and junction with the line to Point of Ayr Colliery.
- The Point of Ayr Colliery line is treated as a long siding. It is not necessary to telephone for permission to send a train down the line, and you will not receive telephone notification of trains approaching.
- Signals TE3 and TE20 are semaphore signals and will clear directly to a green irrespective of the aspect of the next signal.
- Distant signals TE2R and TE21R will automatically clear to a green aspect when all other signals applicable to them are also green.
- Talacre works Absolute Block to Prestatyn and Mostyn on both Up and Down Main Lines.
Mostyn
- Mostyn is the junction with a branch line to Mostyn Docks. In reality it is normally switched out, only being opened when required for traffic purposes.
- You will need to telephone Mostyn Docks for permission to send a train to them.
- All stop signals at Mostyn are semaphore signals and will clear directly to a green irrespective of the aspect of the next signal.
- Distant signals MN5 and MN40 will automatically clear to a green aspect when all other signals applicable to them are also green.
- Mostyn works Absolute Block to Talacre and Holywell Junction on both Up and Down Main Lines.
Holywell Junction
- Holywell Junction is the most varied freight location on the North Wales Coast. There are Up and Down Goods Loops plus numerous sidings.
- The overlap of HJ2 signal will not swing. To accept a train from Rockcliffe Hall, the points must be in the normal position. Any trains that are going into the Down Goods Loop have to be brought to a stand at HJ2, and then signalled into the loop once the overlap has timed out.
- Care should be taken to route trains onto their booked lines at Holywell Junction.
- All stop signals at Holywell Junction are semaphore signals and will clear directly to a green irrespective of the aspect of the next signal.
- Distant signals HJ1 and HJ54 will automatically clear to a green aspect when all other signals applicable to them are also green.
- You will need to telephone Oil Terminal for permission before sending trains into their sidings. They will contact you for permission to send a train into the simulation.
- Holywell Junction works Absolute Block to Mostyn and Rockcliffe Hall on both Up and Down Main Lines.
Rockcliffe Hall
- All signals are colour light.
- The two crossovers can be used by manually abandoning timetables using the train list.
- There are no signallable routes over the crossovers.
Llanrwst
- Llanrwst Signal Box is situated at North Llanrwst Station on the Blaenau Ffestiniog Branch. It is the only passing place between Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog.
- All stop signals at Llanrwst are semaphores and will clear straight to a green irrespective of the aspect of the next signal.
- Distant signals LT1 and LT20 are fixed at caution.
- There is a grey exit arrow in the Down direction for the Up Platform line at North Llanrwst Station. This allows a train from Llandudno Junction to terminate at North Llanrwst and return to Llandudno Junction in times of infrastructure failure between North Llanrwst and Blaenau Ffestiniog. In reality this is achieved by the Signaller at Llanrwst Signal Box displaying a green flag from the Signal Box once the train has come to a stand at Signal LT2. In SimSig, if a route is set from LT2 to this exit arrow, signal LT2 will clear on approach to the Up Platform in the wrong direction. There is no signal at the Blaenau end of the platform, but this is intentional. This movement would not be used for normal traffic purposes.
- In line with rules laid out by Her Majesty’s Railway Inspectorate, it is not possible to allow two trains to run into North Llanrwst from opposite ends at the same time. The interlocking will prevent you from clearing both signals LT2 and LT19 at the same time. Once the first train has cleared the points, the opposing train can be signalled in the normal manner.
- Passenger trains are not permitted to use the loop at Blaenau Ffestiniog.
- A detailed explanation of the operation of the section to Blaenau Ffestiniog is shown above.
- Llanrwst works Single Line Block to Llandudno Junction.
Deganwy
- Both Deganwy, and Deganwy Quay level crossings need to be lowered and cleared before routes can be set across them.
- Signal DY6 is a sempahore and is therefore 2 aspect.
- Distant signal DY5 will automaticall clear to green when it's applicable stop signals are green.
- Signal DY7 acts as the distant signal for Llandudno Junction, and will clear to green when LJ74 is showing a proceed aspect.
Llandudno
- All signals are mechanical and are therefore two aspect.
- LO35 is fixed at caution (or should that be painted at caution).
- All platforms at Llandudno are permissive.
- TRTS is fitted to all platforms at Llandudno.
- Trains needing to detatch a locomotive to use the crossiver between platforms 1 or 2 need to be near end stop plus 20 metres. The maximum length of a train that can run round is seven coaches.
