Simulation Features

ARS & ACI

Full ARS is provided in this simulation. However, the complexities of the track layout and potential for stand-offs mean that it will need close supervision and the signaller may have to intervene in the event of late running. In addition, many routes into yards and sidings have to be set manually. See the workstation notes section for detailed ARS operating notes.

A simplified auto working arrangement is provided for Heighington and Shildon boxes; see their box notes for further details.

Automatic Code Insertion (ACI ) is provided at all stations where trains typically terminate and selected other locations. This can be turned on and off on a station-by-station basis.

Electrification

The East Coast Main Line is provided with standard 25kV overhead electrification. In addition, the route between Pelaw Jn and South Hylton is electrified with 1500V DC overhead, for use by Tyne & Wear Metro trains.

Below is a detailed map showing electrified tracks. Yellow denotes standard 25kV overhead, purple denotes 1500V Metro electrification.

Track Layout

Although at first glance there may appear to be a lot of routing options, on close examination the track layout has considerable limitations. Examples include Birtley Jn- Norwood Jn (single track) and the circle at Newcastle (single track except through Newcastle station and the High Level Bridge). Both of these examples have the potential to cause trains to cause stand-offs between two trains in the event of a mistake by the signaller. It is advised to examine the track layout at Newcastle closely, and take care when routing arriving trains, particularly from the north.

Bi-Directional signalling

Bi-directional signalling is provided between Northallerton and Morpeth.
