West AngliaBrimsdown covers much of the core of the West Anglia part of Liverpool Street. While it is not technically difficult to operate, it does require more forward planning than the other two workstations as trains pass through quickly - and start forming queues very rapidly if anything goes wrong, such as mis-regulation of a stopper in front of a passenger train. To a large extent this workstation relies on the other two inserting trains in order as this workstation has little to no opportunity once set at Hackney Downs or Broxbourne. Only the Enfield Town and Lea Bridge trains, and down trains merging at Cheshunt, offer the signaller here much regulating opportunity.
The area is mostly flat with insignificant gradients on the Cambridge line. Unfortunately gradient information for the Southbury lines was not available at the time of writing.
The Southbury branch is only 50-60mph maximum, while the main Cambridge branch has speeds up to 85mph.
To send a train towards South Tottenham from Seven Sisters, the slot must be requested by left-clicking on the "Slot S14 for 1326 and 5514" control. The route can be set once the indication turns solid white. Signallers should hold trains back at signal 1330 until the slot is given. This avoids blocking down trains from South Tottenham as a train standing at signal 1326 never releases its overlap due to it fouling the crossover.
The junction at CopperMill in the Up direction is straight on towards Lea Bridge while it is a fairly sharp right hand bend to Clapton Junction. Signal L1010 has a position 1 and a position 4 feather for the two routes respectively, and is not approach controlled for either.
Lincoln Road LC and Park Lane LC work the same way. Both crossings are normally closed to road traffic. A local crossing keeper inhabits a hut beside the track and if somebody wishes to cross the track the crossing keeper must get a release from the signaller. In the simulation the crossing keeper will telephone to ask for the release. This can either be answered in the affirmative or postponed for around two minutes. The signaller grants the release by ensuring no routes are set over the crossing in question, and then left-clicking on the F roundel. The roundel will flash until the release is taken by the crossing keeper, whereupon it will turn solid steady green. The crossing keeper will manually operate the gates to allow the road traffic to cross. When the crossing keeper has restored the crossing for railway use, the F roundel will again flash and the crossing keeper will make a call to the signaller to inform that the crossing is now available for railway use. The signaller can then right-click on the F roundel to allow routesetting across the crossing again. The entire sequence will take around 3-4 minutes, so ensure no trains will be delayed before granting the release.
The "A" button for the crossings are auto release controls. When activated these automatically release the crossings after the passage of a train, and take back the release automatically (if available) if a train approaches. These are currently non-functional in the simulation.
The "signal replacement" indications are emergency controls operated by the crossing keeper. If the crossing keeper spots an emergency on the line then the control will be operated which replaces the signals to danger.
All three platforms at Enfield Town will accommodate eight car trains. Measuring tracks on the approach ensure that too long a train is not sent into an occupied platform. If there is a track section failure in the station then using the white "S" exit arrows instead of the usual grey exit arrows will override the platform occupancy. Beware of misusing this though.
TRTS is provided at all three platforms.
Trains between Hackney Downs and Cheshunt can take one of three routes - via the Southbury loop, via Tottenham Hale, or via Southbury and South Tottenham. Trains will accept a diversionary route without questioning the route if it does not miss stopping at any stations. However, the supplied timetable has extremely few trains doing this as nearly all stop at either Tottenham Hale or Seven Sisters (amongst others). Both these stations are station stops on London Underground's Victoria Line.
The flank locking at Cheshunt may look incorrect with a route set into of the bay at the same time as a route set from L1060 to L1394. It is actually correct due to the pairing of points 2545A/B.
TRTS is provided at the Bay platform only.
Signal, point, and track failures are reported by interlocking, per real life as far as the signaller is concerned (the technicians get more detailed information from their diagnostic terminals once informed by the signaller). The interlockings in this workstation are as follows:
- BRIMDOWN (Angel Road to Waltham Cross)
- BURYST (Bury St Jn to Hertford East and Theobolds Grove)
- CHESHUNT (Trinity Lane to Broxbourne)
- SEVSIST (Rectory Road to Edmonton Green)
- TOTHAM (Coppermill Jn to Northumberland Park)
