Welcome to Shrewsbury, home to one of the finest displays of semaphore signalling in the UK. Take control of the four large mechanical boxes that control the Shrewsbury station area, and over half a dozen smaller boxes. Not all is traditional, howewever, as the Cambrian route towards Welshpool is host to the first UK installation of the ERTMS system.
Five lines converge on Shrewsbury: the Marches route from Chester to Newport runs north-to-south, while the secondary route to Wolverhampton diverges to the South East. Just south of Shrewsbury, the Camrian line to Machynlleth, Aberyswyth and Pwllheli diverges. Of more consequence to the SimSig operator, however, is the line heading north east to Crewe, which is included as far as the fringe to Gresty Lane, on the outskirts of Crewe. This line is simulated as it was in 2013, when it was controlled by seven signalboxes, most of which supervised level crossings. The line has since been re-signalled, and is controlled by the South Wales ROC in Cardiff. You'll have to get your regulation right at Shrewsbury, as there are no overtaking opportunities on the 30 mile route.
Traffic is primarily long-distance services connecting the various parts of Wales to each other and England, with a reasonable amount of freight traffic added to the mix and the two-hourly stopping service on the Crewe line.
The simulation features a representation of absolute block, which applies everywhere except the fringes at Gobowen, Wellington and Welshpool. This is particularly detailed at Shrewsbury station, with various enhancements to allow bi-directional shunt moves on all lines and full bi-directional working of platform 4. Simulation options allow Absolute Block to be disabled in certain areas, or entirely, allowing a variable level of difficulty.
