Introduction

A simulation that was at the top of many people’s wish lists, Tyneside puts you in charge of 60 miles of the East Coast Main Line from Darlington to just shy of Morpeth. At the heart of the area is the unique layout at Newcastle, with a full loop over the two Tyne bridges and a complex set of junctions. Also included is Tyne Yard, freight lines at Ferryhill and the top end of the Durham Coast line through to Sunderland. This section is also unusual, in that the main line tracks are shared with the Tyne and Wear Metro services, which operate frequently to South Hylton. As a bonus, the Darlington- Bishop Auckland branch is included in full, with a representation of the two mechanical boxes which control it!

While a quick glance may suggest that the layout is full of track and therefore flexible, look more closely! Many junctions are far more restrictive than they appear to be, and it’s very easy to tie yourself up in knots- for instance, most of the loop at Newcastle is single track. There are other quirks and oddities in there, all of which adds to the challenge of weaving long-distance and local passenger traffic around each other at Newcastle. A further regulating challenge is added by the need to fit freight traffic among the high-speed expresses on the (mainly) two-track East Coast route. If it all sounds a bit much, ARS is on hand to help out, but, as ever, you’d be wise to keep a watchful eye over it.
