Sometimes a signal can be obscured by the landscape (on a sharp bend), by a platform canopy, bridges, or other structures. Each signal should have a minimum sighting distance and if this is not met then a banner repeater can be used to extend the viewing distance. A banner repeater shows:
For the second case, the proceed aspect is one of the yellow aspects if the banner repeater is capable of showing a black bar on a green disc, otherwise it includes the green aspect. The green disc is a relatively modern invention, intended to increase train speeds when the previous signal passed was showing an aspect other than green.
If the signal the banner repeater repeats is a junction, a pair (or more) of banner repeaters may be provided. The vertical heights of the banner repeaters is set so the "straight" or highest speed route is the tallest vertically.
An unlit banner repeater will show as a hollow circle. This will cause the signal prior to the banner repeater to return to red, unless the repeated signal is showing a proceed aspect.
If signal aspects are not being displayed for the particular signal then a letter B is shown instead, regardless of whether the signal is lit or not.
Banner Repeater signals have the same signal number as the signal they are repeating, but have the suffix 'BR' added.
The signaller cannot interact with banner repeaters: they are shown for information purposes.
