Where fixed signals are not provided, for example at Ground Frames or for unsignalled wrong-direction movements, an authorised person is stationed beside the track in a place of safety and visible to the driver of the train. He or she may also be wearing an armband to signify the authority. The handsignaller has coloured flags which indicate to the driver when it is safe to proceed.
SimSig often simulates handsignallers at ground frames by use of fictional levers or switches. These are not interlocked with the ground frame so expect to be able to give authority for a train to move without operating the ground frame correctly. After all, the handsignaller does not physically insert his arms into the ground frame interlocking to authorise such movements!
