Headshunt

A headshunt is a single siding, usually located at the end of a Yard or set of loops. They are typically provided to allow locomotives to run round trains, or to provide space for shunting within the Yard to occur without blocking main lines. As with quite a lot of railway naming conventions, there are no hard-and-fast rules, but the examples below should illustrate the principle:

The sidings to the left of the first three pictures, and to the right of the fourth, are examples of headshunts.

Also synonymous with 'Neck Siding'/'Neck'.
