One Train Working

One Train Working

Also known as:

  • One engine in steam
  • One diesel in oil
  • One Train In Section

This is a method whereby a section of line is allocated to just one train. That train can be sure there will be no other trains on the line because the interlocking has enforced this fact. Usually the line will have no pointwork or signalling (except to get back off the single line) and in effect is a long siding. Usually most, if not all, the line will not have any train detection equipment. Proof that the line is clear of trains is gained by checking a pair of tracks outside of the single line occupy and clear in the correct sequence for a train moving away from the single line, or a train staff being in the poession of the signalman.
