An overlap is a short distance (usually 200yds or 183m) beyond a signal detected clear by a Track Section . This distance must be clear before the preceding stop signal can exhibit a proceed aspect . Facing points within this distance may also be locked, and trailing points will always be locked. This locking is timer released.
Its purpose is to provide an additional safety margin in case the driver misjudges his braking and then overshoots the signal .
