These panels predominantly existed in the Great Western region of the UK. Route setting was achieved by turning an Entrance switch and then pressing an Exit button. If a signal was both an Entrance to one route and the Exit to another, there would be both a button and a switch.
The switch has either a red arrow pointing upwards, a yellow arrow pointing downwards, or both. Turning the switch so the arrow points in the direction of travel starts the route setting process and then pressing the exit button (a simple push button with no markings) completes the sequence.
