Every so often in most sims you will get a little note in the actions column of the timetable saying J:1A01, which indicates that two trains will be joining (coupling up) at that location.
When the train reaches the location it then waits until the other train arrives and then joins. This will take a couple of minutes to achieve,
The train can then depart although quite often it can reverse direction at this location.
