Operating hours 05.14-23.59: 386 trains
Welcome to 1991! Manchester's railway network has changed fundamentally with the opening of the Windsor Link and transfer of many services from Victoria to Piccadilly in 1988. Local services in the Manchester East area have been badly affected, with reduced frequencies in the rush hours as longer-distance trains take available paths. In contrast, the Ashton route now has an hourly local service. Freight has been mostly rerouted onto other lines, but there are still stone workings and new trains reversing at Ashburys en route to/ from the Trafford Park area. Overall the service pattern is quieter and more uniform than in previous years, but still busy enough to be interesting.
