Looked up VS188 in the user manual & this forum, and there is no mention of it lacking a Green aspect. Under the conditions below is seems that a Green would be displayed -unless there is some other intervening factor. Log in to reply |

VS178 signal at Shortlands Jn has two preliminary route indicators associated with it to indicate which way the junction is set before an approaching train sights the signal. These are provided as there is no high speed diverging route from the signal with the signaling sequences approaching the junction is the same for both routes. As and certain types of wagons are not permitted through Penge Tunnel they were introduced when the junction was re modeled to give driver of freight services advance notice of an incorrect set at the junction in time to safely bring there train to a stand at VS178 signal. The first preliminary route indicator is between VS192 signal and Bromley South station. If when a train passes this indicator and it is blank because no route is set at Shortlands Jn. VS188 will not be able to show a green aspect even if the route has been set at the junction in the meantime. This is done so the driver leaves Bromley South believing the route is still not set at the Junction until he/she sights the second PR which is between VS188 signal and VS184 signal. This was omitted from the manual - my apologies. It's there now, albeit worded slightly different from Lagertoe's reply (whose descriptions take priority as he is very much In The Know ).

Thanks for the explanation! Since some trains must treat the junction signal as a stop due to an incorrect route, all trains are affected. -Although normally I imagine the routes would be set sufficiently in advance. Interesting from a rules/operations perspective that the freight drivers aren't just relied upon to remember that the first preliminary indicator was blank. There must be a litany of other freight-specific rules that they must remember, no? Follow up Q: Why not mount the indicators at the same location as the signals instead of going to the expense of building additional pedestals, masts, etc. VS188 is at service braking distance from Shortlands, so I'm curious about the benefit of placing a route indicator prior to that point. The PR's were placed at this location to enable freight trains conveying SB1C guage traffic to approach the junction at the line speed of 60 MPH without them a driver of these services have to reduce speed over two signal sections until they sight VS178 signal and confirm a non permitted route(via Herne Hill) has not been set in error. The drivers knowledge of the PR's and there meaning would be part of the route learning and when they were put in after the grade separation at Shortlands Jn the drivers operating over the route would have been issued a "yellow peril" detailing the signalling chnages and there meaning. I suspect the reason they are not put at the signal is because any route indicator associated with a signal normally means a diverging is after that signal and before the next one. I hope this has been some assistance Log in to reply The following user said thank you: DaveBarraza |

Yes it was of assistance, thanks! We have something similar on NYCT where a signal in advance is being held at red for grade timing, and the qualifying aspect shown under the yellow is "S" or "D" depending on what the signal in advance will clear to reveal normal or diverging. Of course there are also timers (approach released signals) without a specific aspect which will time the train with no indication to the driver following the normal aspect sequence.
