Signal 365 (Down Stour) and chaining 23/02/2015 at 09:33 #69497

Last night I was running a chain with New Street and Wolverhampton connected, using the default timetable (0445 start), and New Street in "2001 Onwards" mode and Wolvo in "2004-2007" mode, as per the TT instructions. New Street was started with the "set main routes in auto mode" option selected. Both sims were hosted on the same machine.

On attempting to set the cross-boundary route from NS to Wolvo from signal 365 - which is not set into auto mode initially - for the first train on the Down Stour, the route lit up and the points appeared okay (no out-of-correspondence flashing), but the signal did not clear after several minutes, even with a train standing at it. Cancelling and re-setting the route on the Down Stour did not solve the problem.

However, cancelling and setting the route into the Down Loop did cause the signal to clear. Following that, cancelling the route into the loop and re-setting the route on the Down Stour also resulted in a clear signal. The signal gave no problems at all after the first train, clearing as expected for either route.

I've not had any problems in New Street singleplayer before, nor can I find/remember any reference to this problem before. I suspect the chaining boundary is the cause of the problem - does New Street require some information from Wolverhampton (e.g. the overlap) before the signal is cleared, that for some reason was not being sent?

Without trying, I think it's because WN's end of the route was already set when you chained them together, so when the cross boundary attempt was tried, it thought it was already set. It's something we need to improve - and an idea has just occurred to me as to how to do it. Where's a lightbulb smiley when you need one?

Your suspicion seems about right, as the route is indeed shown as set when Wolves is opened. The problem also occurs on loading a save - but you probably already worked that out!

Was this one meant to be fixed in Wolverhampton v1.2? There's a note about erroneous cancellations of fringe signals in the v1.2 release notes which I took to be related to this, but the problem is still there, so I suspect I was wrong to assume that!
