Microsoft Security Essentials replaced Microsoft Live OneCare which was a chargeable service. However, Security Essentials is a free download (although it does check that your system is running a genuine copy of Windows). I have been using it for about 2 months now and have not been asked for a registration code. I would have thought I would have had a nudge by now if MS did want a code.

For confirmation, the MS web-site currently shows "Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology."

Yes Postal, I knew that it was paid-for because I've used it myself in the time it was named OneCare.

My selection:
Avast for antivirus. used to use AVG but the latest version was desperately heavy on the PC so I switched

Use a router not a USB modem which covers inbound access firewalling.
The main issue I recall with Windows Firewall was the total absence of outbound permissions.

Old version of Zonealarm for outbound / programme firewalling. Newer versions have bad reports about nagging etc.

Have not got spy or phishware, but do look at the URL before clicking.

regards
Bill

I've just installed Virgin's new Security Tool. Looking good so far.
