Need to interpose for departing yard trains? 03/07/2013 at 08:30 #46291 | |

The Westbury manual states: Quote: Departing trainsI can't see any need to Interpose, since a berth with the headcode automatically appears on the panel as soon as the train enters my area. I take this to mean that the shunter types in the headcode as soon as I give him permission, and the train describer hardware automatically transmits this to my IECC panel and creates a berth for it, just as in other sims I have played. As soon as the headcode appears, I can begin setting the route. Interposing would duplicate this task, also introducing the possibility of creating a berth in the wrong place. Is there any special reason why I should have to Interpose in this sim? Last edited: 03/07/2013 at 08:33 by maxand Log in to reply |

I could be mistaken - it's been a while since Westbury's had an outing - but I seem to remember that, in 'easy' mode, the Shunter interposes the headcode into the berth at the outlet signal on your behalf. In reality (and the other levels of difficulty), the facility for the Shunter to do this is unlikely to exist at most locations! Tom Log in to reply The following user said thank you: maxand |

I can't find this actually mentioned in the sim options or in the manual, though I'm only playing at Beginner's level here. I thought the facility for shunters to enter TDs is a lot more widespread than you suggest. Maybe this is just a feature of the sims I've played. The F6 Telephone Calls and the Train Describers pages in the Wiki don't set out any protocols for yards, possibly because up till now each sim was an independent exe. I wonder how many players actually interpose for trains arriving from yards as a general principle, and how many rely on the simulation of TD hardware to do it for them? Maybe the Wiki should spell out a procedural policy regarding this. It might confuse a few beginner players if all sims were changed so that a train could not arrive in the player's area from a yard unless the player manually created a new berth to receive it, as opposed to a new berth automatically being created when a train is handed on from a fringe controller (adjacent area). It's been a long while since I played Westbury but that statement may be the reason. Try a harder level and see what happens. It depends purely on what the sim is doing. If it does it itself, then there is no need to do anything. Why would you? If the sim doesn;t interpose for you, at some point you'll get a red TC occupation on the sim but not know what train it is so you have no choice BUT to do it yourself. " said: Maybe the Wiki should spell out a procedural policy regarding this. And now's where it gets awkward....This is not a generic setting. Each sim could be slightly different as it's down to how a developer decides they want the sim to work. It's not a sim wide option either, individual locations within the same sim could be different too. Some sims, like Kings Cross, interpose automatically no matter what. Some, like South Humberside, have an "easy" mode and a "normal" mode. In "Easy" mode, trains from yards are automatically interposed. In "normal" mode, they aren't. Normal mode is a more "real world" option but it can become a handful so easy mode is included till users can get a handle on things. Then there are locational differences. Certain locations in a sim may not have a berth for a signal in real life. Take the goods yard at Scunthorpe, the East Dock at Scunthorpe station or the Gunhouse loop sidings. None of these have berths on the real Scunthorpe NX panel so there is no place to interpose into in real life. Easy to add in the sim but not reality. Now, I haven't played Westbury in a long time so I can't say what it does. However, whatever it does do should be put in the Westbury manual as it will likely be different sim to sim. Maybe this is just a feature of the sims I've played. The situation has arisen since Westbury has been refreshed, but the manual hasn't been updated to reflect the later core-code. The facility for automatic TD interpose at beginner level only is a relatively recent core-code addition, and hence wasn't in the original manual, indeed I suspect the majority of the manual reflects the pre-scrolly (ie paged) version that was superseded in July 2008 I think, when scrolly sims made their debut. I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either. Last edited: 03/07/2013 at 14:27 by AndyG Reason: typo Log in to reply |
