Hi, I've just started using the West Hamstead Sim and notice some signals I've not seen elsewhere; nor can I find documented in the Wiki. They are auto signals with a circle and a letter R. They seem to work the same as the ones with a letter E; (right-clicking causes the signal to go to danger) so what's the difference ?

In real life I believe "R" can be relied upon to provide protection for certain activities as the signal is proved to be displaying a red aspect when operated.

"E" cannot be relied upon as it is not guaranteed that the red aspect is showing.

Jusy to confirm, Karl is right. An 'E' is emergency replacement to red but there is no guarantee the signal is actually at red. An 'R' has feedback to "prove" that the red lamp is lit.

As has been said above. Buttons marked 'E' are emergency replacement buttons only. For example, if you have a report of a cow on the line, the emergency button would be pulled immediately to bring the first train to a stand. If any subsequent trains need to be cautioned you can't use the emergency button. You would need to use a controlled signal to bring trains to a stand.

The 'R' marked buttons can be relied upon so could be used for the first and subsequent trains. They can also be used as protecting signals for line blockages where the 'E' buttons can't. At West Hampstead we regularly use the 'R' buttons for line blockages.

Hate to throw a spanner in the works, but...............

Under todays standards the above 3 answers are correct. However, if you look at Madabouttrains wonderful reproductions of Feltham panel you'll notice that all of the replacement buttons have an R on them. Only something like 2 of them are guaranteed the rest are over non-vital FDM equipment and cannot be relied upon.

However at West Hampstead the E's and the R's are correct. The only guaranteed replacements are the ones around the Belsize Tunnel area. We commissioned those in 2003 when we installed the mid tunnel signals to enable better headway prior to the closure of the Thameslink line for the construction of St Pancras Box.

At kings cross (see profile pic) you have an E replacement button just to the right of the exit signal.
