Hi all,

On Windows 11 - I updated to the new loader this afternoon and after the update completed tried to use the desktop shortcut and received the "App cannot run on your PC" message.

On reboot the shortcut has disappeared from the desktop. I might add that this is not the first time that shortcuts have disappeared under Win 11. Some of my amateur radio stuff disappeared last week too.

This is what I find in Loader0log

========== SimSig Loader version 5.17.2 ==========
System date/time: 28/02/2022 17:55:31
========== Application terminated ==========
========== SimSig Loader version 5.17.2 ==========
System date/time: 28/02/2022 17:55:44
========== Application terminated ==========

I would try to run as an administrator, but, even after a search I can't find "Loader.exe" although the timetables and simulation directories are all still there there is no sign of the Loader.exe file in c:\users\public\public documents\Simsig or in c:\users\Appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\recent items

Hi Vince,

Initially would you be able to help us out by answering the following? This will hopefully help us pin down what's going on.

Was everything running fine under loader 5.17.2 until you update today?

Is controlled folder access turned on?

1) Type Windows security into the search bar
2) Click Virus and threat protection
3) Scroll down and click Manage ransomware protection
4) It should tell you on that page if Controlled folder access is on or off.

What version of Windows 11 are you running?

Select Start > Settings > System > About. Open About settings. You should be able to copy your Windows specifications and Device specifications using the Copy button.

Thanks in advance

Yes, all was OK prior to the update.

Windows Spec

Device name DESKTOP-xxxx
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB
Device ID xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Product ID 00326-10000-00000-AA697
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display
Edition Windows 11 Home
Version 21H2
Installed on ‎19/‎01/‎2022
OS build 22000.493
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22000.493.0

Virus & Threat Protection just tells me that Kaspersky Total Protection is turned on. I don't see any mention of Manage Ransomware Protection despite clicking all the links shown in the panel.

If I search for "Controlled Folder Access" I get "Page not available" and I need to contact my IT helpdesk - which is sadly ...me!

Would starting Win 11 as an administrator help?

Thanks for that Vince, that rules out an issue with running Windows 11S, and it seems your anti-virus is overriding the Windows defaults so Controlled Folder Access should be off.

Ah I missed this in your original post, the loader should be in C:\Program Files (x86)\SimSig is it still there, or has it been removed?

Yes C:\Program Files (x86)\SimSig is still there and it appears SinsigLoader.exe is still there but won't run, even as an administrator. Why a search didn't find it I don't know.

Also there is SimsigLoader.exe.old.

If I move Simsg.exe out of the way and rename SimsigLoader.exe.old to SimsigLoader.exe then it runs OK but I can't get past the start screen without updating, of course.

Does it give the same "App cannot run on your PC"? I can't quite work out if it's Windows deciding it can't run it, or your Anti-Virus.

I wonder if you need to allow an exception to the file in your Kaspersky anti-virus?

Well, some progress I think.

So I deleted SimsigLoader.exe, renamed the .old file to SimsigLoader.exe and ran it. Then I did the update - again.

A new Simsig loader.exe file is produced and Version 5.19 runs OK from it.

I have re-created the shortcut and that works too.

So it appears its not an anti-virus or firewall issue as I've not added it as an exception yet.

The question remains though, why did it fail in the first instance?

$64,000 question?

I'm glad you've got it working!

Unfortunately without being able to reproduce it to work out what's going on, it's hard to give a definite answer.

Interestingly when I was looking into this I found a case of someone having your exact issue but with Microsoft Office itself, same circumstance as well after running an update.

On a more generic note, we are actively looking in to issues cropping up with Windows 11 that users are reporting.

Ok, understood.

Thanks for the help and guidance. I'm still a bit of a novice with Win 11 although on the surface it looks just like a flashy version of Win 10.

But I guess there quite a few changes under the bonnet, as it were.

Thank you again for the help.
