Couldn't find any info on this but wanted to know what is the longest distance a train has traveled through Simsig. That is what real world train has traveled the furthest entirely within the bounds of Simsigs available scheduled or otherwise?

(I supposed we could include sims known to be in development)

If withdrawn sims are included, then the Penzance to Aberdeen XC service is a good contender, running through Cornwall, Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol, Gloucester, Saltley, New Street, Saltley again, Derby, Trent, Sheffield, Leeds Ardsley, Leeds E&W, York, Newcastle and running out of simmable track at Morpeth. according to TRUST, the mileage to Morpeth is 570 miles.

And presumably it would be possible to recreate this as long as you had the withdrawn sims?

I'd suggest this wouldn't count because Saltley and Gloucester never chained with eachother

Thinking about currently available sims only, I don't know how far Didcot -> Piccadilly would be, or alternatively, Cardiff -> Piccadilly

Although there has been an Aberdeen to Penzance service for quite a few years now, as far as I know there has never been a Penzance to Aberdeen service. The northbound cross country workings to Aberdeen have started from various west country stations (Plymouth, Exeter, Newton Abbot, Paignton, Bristol) but never any further west than Plymouth.

Was there not an Elgin to Penzance service at one time?

with the use of the NLL (now withdrawn) you could do some lengthy routes with the freight flows between the south-east/east and Northwest

and with the in-dev Doncaster Stn you can do the buffers at KX to the fringe with Morpeth, quite a considerable distance, especially if you travel via Leeds!

Yes, essentially an Elgin - Aberdeen that used the XC portion as stock became the Aberdeen - Penzance.
That would of course be a WCML / Carstairs train, not ECML.

Other odd destination combinations did appear with engineering delays, so there has been a Penzance - Aberdeen, and even an Aberdeen - Harwich. Not in GBTT / WTT of course.

To be fair the service I looked at was to Edinburgh although I'm sure historically there was a Penzance- Aberdeen going way back. I had a look to check the mileage.

If we're considering in development sims, but not withdrawn sims then you could do the same journey, but running from Bristol to Swindon, didcot, Oxford, banbury, Leamington then Saltley, regaining path at New street?

Trent and sheffield don't chain though so it depends if you valid chain has to exist.

231 miles from Piccadilly to Pembrey & Burry Port, which is substantially more than Piccadilly to Reading.

There was a northbound in the 1984 GBTT, and so in the Motherwell & Edinburgh SimSig timetables (1S71)

For current sims, I suggest :
Morpeth (ex) - Reading (ex) via Leeds and Birmingham = 332m
Dyce (ex) - Carnforth (ex) via Edinburgh & Carstairs (Elgin - Penzance) = 300m
The also-rans
Reading (ex) - Penzance via Bristol = 288m
Llanelli (inc) - Shrewsbury - Crewe - Holyhead = 258m

None of the Sunday Plymouth - Bristol - Oxford - Newcastles I found in 1984 GBTT went via Leeds or served Penzance, so fall off Conisbrough awaiting the conclusion of engineering work to sim Doncaster station

According to Realtime trains Cardiff to Holyhead is 3 miles longer than this at 234 miles.

I'll throw into the hat the Brighton - Manchester service, although now long since gone, the sims involved would be Three bridges then the WCML finishing up at Manc Piccadilly. I believe it went via Kensington and joined the WCML at Acton.

You can do London Euston - Holyhead at 262 miles all within the confines of SimSig with currently released simulations.

There were 2 round trips a day only the overnight Manchester Brighton used the WCML to Mitre Bridge Jn then on to Brighton. The return workings, and daytime Manchester Brighton were variations on the XC Paddington Manchesters running via Acton ML Jn, Reading & Birmingham.

It doesn't have to be passenger service right?

6M77/6V01 the Earles Sdgs - Cwmbargoed is a good contender if so?
runs Valleys - Cardiff - Newport - Hereford - Shrewsbury - Crewe - Man South - Stockport - Man East - Peak District.
Clocks in at 269 miles Cwmbargoed to New Mills Central (discounting Peak district) or 283 miles if Peak district is allowed?

So whilst Trent indeed doesn't chain to Sheffield, reading this I thought there might be an option to route around the gap as it does chain to the old Worksop Sim.
Which then itself does start up a chain with the new Sheffield sim, albeit sim trains only work going towards Worksop and not in the other direction (never mind nothing long distance would be timetabled through that way for this threads actual question).

Though thinking about it since Trent doesn't chain to Derby either, you have a east midlands shaped gap in any longest route ideas through that area either way.

I don't think Worksop chained to Trent either, if I remember the only chains available were Trent- (Old) Sheffield and Worksop- South Humberside.

Running them up and checking that does seem to be the case (I could swear I had Worksop and Trent working together once upon a time, but clearly my memory is playing tricks on me.)

To be more helpful to the cause of this thread (without actually having many ideas of actual train journeys to suggest of my own ), I'll point out that whilst bristol sim still not being back missing might break some routes to the far south west, exeter - westbury - swindid is a fully chainable collection of current sims (albeit once again not one much will be timetabled through)

In my day the route was Kensington - North Pole Junction - Old Oak thence down the GW. I don't recall a Brighton-Manchester changing engines at the Mitre when I relieved at North Pole (mid-1979 - early 1980) but I suppose it might have happened later on (when I was on the West London the Brighton-Manchester was being hailed as a brand-new initiative). The Mitre Bridge engine changes were all Motorails or specials. (Unless my memory is fading, that is.)

The North - Dover / Brightons were indeed usually via Oxford, early on direct Oak Oak jn (ML) - North Pole, and later when that shut for the Eurostar depot they went via Willesden SW Sidings.

There were though a few WCML - SR which did change loco at Acton Wells. Have found a 1991 SAT Manchester - Eastbourne train pair that way, as the 09:06 path from Birmingham via Oxford was an extra through Weymouth train.
Surprising it only saved 20 minutes vice Oxford

1990 diverted 14:10 Eastbourne - Manchester:

Everybody's mentioning passenger trains, but what about freight trains such as the Burngullow to Irvine silver bullets. IIRC that was the longest[distance wise] freight service running on the BR network. Running via Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol, Severn Tunnel, then right at Maindee East Jn, via The Marches to Crewe & then north via the WCML to Scotland worked by a pair of Cl.37/5 locos throughout. Most of which is covered by a sim. Passenger wise although it's not all covered on sims be 'The European' which originated at Harwich Parkeston Quay to Glasgow Central. This train used to run across country from Harwich, Ipswich, Stowmarket, Ely, March, Peterborough, Grantham, Nottingham, Alfreton & Mansfield Parkway, Chesterfield, Sheffield[loco change SF Cl.47/4 off & another one on], Stockport, Manc'r Piccadilly, Manc'r Oxford Road, Bolton Preston[loco change diesel off/AC eletric on] & the via the wcml to Glasgow Central. It ran as 1S85 07.17 Harwich Parkeston Quay to Glasgow Central & the return went via the same route in return & ran as 1E87. Then later in 1989 it was sent from Harwich up the GE to Channelsea Curve Jn over the NLL & then ran via the WCML all the way to Glasgow Central. Also for a short time this train was worked by a diesel dragging the AC electric DIT over the NLL.

Mainly passenger is easier for most to check in a GBTT. I did look in one WTT I have but did not find anything long distance via Leeds in the oil trains from west Wales.
Without a Preston sim, Holyhead is further from Crewe. So the Herbrandston - Holyhead beats the Herbrandston - Polmadie as that falls off at Wigan. A passenger would be slightly longer anyway if running via Swansea station.

I think longest run on current sims would be Llanelli (inc) - Newport - Shrewsbury - Stockport - Huddersfield - Leeds - Newcastle - Morpeth (ex).
Was there ever a train that way ?
Mails ?
Oil from West Wales ?
Steel ?
GW-LNER through coach ?

The discussion has been around the longest route which can be run in SimSig with sims which chain and at some point has been released.

Bristol has never chained to Newport, and there has never been a Preston sim, which splits both of your examples in half.
