Whilst playing Doncaster Station Simsig, several times having collared up (placing reminder appliances) on signals at Danger protecting crossings on the Up & Down Lincoln lines, having given permission for large loads, slow vehicles etc to cross, I was getting phone calls with message, I thought you told me it was safe. Investigating further I discovered the following faults.

All era modes (1981-1996) (1997-1999) (2000-2004) (2005-2012) (2013-2016) (2017-2022) (2022 - onwards) whether Level Crossings are enabled or disabled.

1. Finningley MCB & Wroot Road CCTV, protecting signal on Down Lincon for both crossings is D765 signal. When track circuit T1071 becomes occupied, D765 signal clears after a short time, even when a reminder appliance is fitted to hold it at Danger!

2. Wroot Road CCTV, protecting signal on Up Lincoln is D766 signal. When track circuit T1282 becomes occupied, the track at D768 signal in rear , D766 signal clears after a short time, even when a reminder appliance is fitted to hold it at Danger!

3. Park Drain CCTV, protecting signal on Up Lincoln is D760 signal. When track circuit T0981 becomes occupied, D760 signal clears after a short time, even when a reminder appliance is fitted to hold it at Danger!

Unless there is a special feature at Doncaster, normally when collaring a controlled or semi-auto signal, as these protecting signals are, it prevents the signal from clearing, in other words maintaining them at Danger. This is the case on the Doncaster Station Simsig for other protecting signals on the Up & Down Lincoln not mentioned above and those at Sutton CCTV near Ranskill Loops. I haven't tested those northern end of Doncaster Station.

I looked through Mantis list, not much detail there so do not know if this is reported or not. Likewise a forum search came up with nothing.

Retired Professional Railwayman (1981-2023); Pway & S&T (1981-88); Former Signalman/Signaller/ Signalling Trainer (1989-2023) [AB, TCB, Mechanical, NX, WestCad, Hitachi SARS]; Railway Historian (esp.SER, LCDR); Member of The Permanent Way Institution..

These crossings are operated by the signaller at Beckington I believe so inaffect acting as a crossing keeper for Doncaster. Putting a reminder on these signals wouldnt do anything for this reason. Attached a photo of the real panel.

Looking at that photo, D760 is an auto, so collaring it won't do anything. (Collars work on route setting, not aspect controls.)

The "oi!" phone calls only apply to AHB, ABCL, AOCL, MCL, and TEL crossings, not MCBs (whether CCTV or not). So there's something odd going on with those crossings.

How long has this been a Simsig feature? I didn't realise you could collar 3rd party controlled/slotted signals to prevent them clearing. is this some sort of compromise vs real life where it doesn't work that way?

My friend, none of those are controlled signals.

Your only options to protect those crossings are controlled signals at Bessacarr Jn (up line) and the emergency replacement button on D757 near Broomston (down line).

The signals you refer to are all automatic, whether they have the permissive plate displayed or otherwise.

I will leave it up to a railwayman of your experience to know what happens when you put a block on an automatic signal.

Piping hot regards,

In reality, I suspect the signaller on Doncaster Panel would be able to instruct the crossing keeper to maintain their signals at Danger to protect the UWCs for you.
