This evening marks the final Postal services to operate for Royal Mail since the inception of Mail on rail in 1830.

The final runs today are/were:

1M27 12:35 Shieldmuir - Willesden PRDC arriving 20:04. 325009+005
1S24 12:26 Willesden - Shieldmuir arriving 21:06. 325002+001
1S55 20:44 Daventry - Shieldmuir arriving 02:05. 325014+011, which will be the final run, Followed by its normal ECS move to Mossend yard.

Mail by Rail has gone from strength to strength expanding from humble beginnings into a complex network of interlocked services worthy of its own sector, followed by a reduction and rebirth through the Railnet programme. Royal Mail did of course withdraw Mail by rail in 2004, which saw the end of loco hauled coaching stock and the Travelling Post Office and the 325s going into store to later return in their current form.

I'd like to raise a virtual glass to the end of a 194 year old Institution and here's hoping its not the real end as was thought in 2004.
