Can I ask how signallers at Oxford would actually deal with late crews? For instance, I have 2P42 (Banbury to Paddington) approaching Platform 3 and I have been notified that the new crew will be 15 minutes late (10:23 for a 10:08 scheduled departure). 1O08 (Manchester Piccadilly to Bournemouth, currently on time) will be along well before 10:23 wanting the platform. Can I ask the "old" crew to take 2P42 onto the UPL temporarily, or must I deal with having Platform 3 blocked? I'm intrigued to know what would happen in "real life".

You'd have to wait.

As soon as we (GWR Control) are aware there may be an issue we'll get a message to the Oxford Signalman that the train will be waiting Driver, driver not due on site until 1023.

If we've told them in good time and there isn't a freight in there the Signalman will often put the 2P up the loop at Oxford North to allow the cross country past. If we've not gotten the message to them in time to do that it will go into the Up platform and sit it out. If there's room they'll often bring the XC in on top to at least allow it to be held in a platform rather than OX19.

If the 2P stops at Radley etc then the Oxford Signalman will usually put the stopper up the loop at Hinksey North once it eventually departs and let the XC overtake. If it's non-stop to Didcot then it makes no difference - both the stopper and the XC can do 90, and have broadly similar acceleration.
