I do wish they wouldn't let Media Studies graduates loose on technical matters.

There was nothing overtly wrong in the article? From the video it very much appears that the train failed to get up the slope and required a banking engine.

I'm not going to expect them to go into much more detail than that....

I'd rather them at the BBC writing articles about trains than being high up at the DfT making decisions about them... (see also Cartographers)

The train became stuck between Bishops Lydeard and Crowcombe Heathfield while on the 1000hrs from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead. I was on signalbox duty at Crowcombe Heathfield at the time as a trainee on my 6th turn. I don't know if there is anything against me quoting all the timings as noted in the TRB (I won't just in case) but I will say that 60103 entered section on time and was due to run non-stop through Crowcombe Heathfield at 1014hrs. However after it came to a stand in section it was given permission by the signalman at BL to set back toward Bishops Lydeard. I don't know whether or not 60103 and its train went back all, or part of, the way into BL station but it was given a second attempt at that incline. Hopwever it came to a stand at Eastcombe (milepost 169) and was declared a failure. Another engine was sent into the section from BL and this pushed 60103's train all the way to Crowcombe Heathfield before being detached. After the banker had been detached 60103 and its train, which should have gone through Crowcombe non-stop at 1014hrs, left 72 minutes late at 1126hrs.

For anyone wondering the banker engine was 7820 "Dinmore Manor" which was booked to operate the 1041 from Bishops Lydeard. After being detached from the rear of 60103's train, 7820 ran back to BL light engine and reattached to its train which left Bishops Lydeard 1 hour late.

For 60103's second outing of the day from BL (1413 from Bishops Lydeard) a banker was ready and waiting and was used in order to prevent a repeat of 60103's earlier performance. Due to this, and the fact that it seemed to have made up time a bit, 60103's afternoon run from BL left Crowcombe with rather less delay (31 minutes) than earlier. The banker was a diesel this time: not sure which one.

Why all the tosh about "powerful" etc. .when the railway clearly gave them the explanation the the failure was due to slipping.

Postal, You seem to have forgotten that this was the world famous Flying Scotsman and everything it does attracts some media focus which nearly always blows things out of all proportion. Personally I think it is famous for eating up more money than coal and should have been left in the siding to see out it's days as a static attraction. Hardly a section of railway line known for bankers in it's time, not like the Lickey or Shap.

This is what happens when you allow foreign engines onto the GWR.

"Hmmm," said Flying Scotsman, "If 'Up' means 'Go' and 'Down' means 'Stop', then 'Even Further Down' must mean 'Go Backwards'..."

Postal, Alex et al,

I had an email from the regular signalman who was my trainer on Saturday morning. He informs me that, and I quote, "the initial cause of FS stopping in Eastcombe cutting on Saturday was because there were trespassers on the line...it just could not get any grip to start again".

Damn trespassers: there are plenty of viewing points along the line.

HTIOI,
Dave
