Phone up the shunter (Longsight North if the train's coming from Picc), and they'll give you the slot for the line they want it on. Steamer in post 103131 said:Those Liverpool- Scarborough services are difficult. The good news is that they pass each other (at around 5-10 minutes past the hour), so you just need the one gap.Unless running exceptionally late, generally the Northern 2Hxx services will be held to avoid further delays to eastbound services on the stretch between Ashburys and Guide Bridge which has several station stops and no possibility of looping. It's also pretty common to see everything approaching on the down lines held as they can pull time back during the turnaround in Piccadilly. The bi-di lines are indeed used to the maximum potential; ditto the via buttons - a clever 'trick' is when a train from 13 needs to go into Mayfield Loop at the same time as a departure from 9-12 onto the slows; the slow line departure can be routed via button 'J' with the only penalty being that it remains on a 15mph speed restriction for slightly longer. It's worth noting that the drivers dockets (at Northern and I'd assume others too) don't refer to any line or platform so it is entirely up to the signaller how a service is routed. Although the sim will penalise for an incorrect platform, in the real world alterations are frequent due to delays or set swaps; so don't panic about losing a few points! It's usually followed by something arriving on the US. Not to mention a few weeks ago when everything ran on the wrong line between Oxford Road east and Ardwick Jn for most of the day; station staff said it was a signalling fault. Other regulating hints, for anyone interested: The bi-di capability at Salford Crescent is also used when need be; most often with trains from Victoria. It's a bit of a shock dropping down from Victoria and seeing another train rolling in on the Down Bolton! Be careful not to send an Atherton-bound train into P1 though. In the opposite direction, it's fairly common for the xx:44 Blackburn to be dropped into P2 while the Huddersfield is in P1, as the Huddersfield's are almost always late for most of the morning and early afternoon*. The move allows the following Airport to arrive at Salford while the Blackburn leaves. I never understood why flashing yellows weren't provided from the Up Bolton to P1- although on the plus side, it was recently upgraded to approach release from yellow. It was very rare for the bi-di to be used at Bolton (except P1; it was very rare for a train to or from Darwen to use P3). In the Up direction, the crossover is half a mile away from the station and has a 15mph limit. Incidentally, I think MP628 may have been approach released- I can't recall seeing 636 show better than Y. *The biggest inaccuracy in the simulation is the fact that Preston PSB manages to send trains on time on the Up Bolton... If you wanted to have passing times you had to ask the running foreman to print out a schedule with that info on it, the default being just the calling locations. Those Liverpool- Scarborough services are difficult. Yep, route knowledge is king! That said, our dockets do tend to state a via on them where needed - so for example the docket with 5J15 in the sim (now 5J05) states it runs via Styal (It's a round the houses ECS to Newton Heath, which reverses at Wilmslow and incidentally on a Friday forms the Denton Flyer from Stockport) to ensure it goes booked route. Typically the signaller will ring you on the GSMR if the route is to change; there was a period a couple of months ago when everything booked via the Airport avoider had to run via Stockport as the points only worked for routes to the airport. There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway. Log in to reply |

It's back to an 0530 save for me to take another run at the morning peak, and try and keep above 50%. Log in to reply |

First of all, great job. As a local and someone who has had the opportunity to visit the various boxes around Manchester, its great to finally see something here. A question. Are there any plans to update the Piccadilly panel with the Chord and new timetables to go with it? Log in to reply |

Hunts Cross is a good sim to play as you also get the Merseyrail trains on there. What I was wondering is when you terminate a train at Liverpool South Parkway P5, and interpose its new head code at signal HC541 when the train heads back towards Liverpool Central it doesn't take the head code with it, it stays at P5
