Never-ending crew change? 20/11/2017 at 15:36 #103099

Here is a save of train 1P77 in the 2016 TT standing in Oxford P3 waiting for its 20:06 crew (it called me when entering reporting the crew would be there at 20:06).
However even when letting it run until 20:19, the train stays at "crew change" status.

Any way to get it to move?

Did you recently update the loader to version 4.6.5 and is the game you playing a continuation of a save from an earlier loader version?

If the answer is yes the the most likely cause is the update, as with most updates to the loader they tend to be save game incompatible, there are times when they do work but that is NOT guaranteed.

Yes, I did update the Loader. However that happened before 1P77 entered the game.

Given this, is there a reasonable way to downgrade to an earlier version of the loader temporarily?

When I checked the relevant folder after the upgrade SimSigloader.exe.bak was showing alongside the new updated loader. This may be a saved version of the loader you would like to revive.

It maybe a backup version but I doubt it will be of much use, it will be a backup from the first time that the backup system was implimented and will most likely be a version of the loader older than 4.6.3

Just renamed and tried and it is showing v4.6

Perhaps the answer would be to archive off (or delete) the .bak file so that on any update the new .bak file (if created) would be the pre-update version.

Please see my post here.

The problem is how the backup is created, it is also why when updating certain files you will get "failed to rename" (or something like that.)

Having had a career in IT, so I know that new versions of software can sometimes cause a problem, I always make a copy of any new SimSigLoader, naming it "SimSigLoader(v4.6.X)", whenever a new version is installed. Doing this allows me to easily revert back to the previous version if an update causes problems. Regular backups of your files also helps, of course.

I started a sim in 2000 era with the 1978 TT after updating to loader V4.6.5 and currently have 6M24 0455 Bristol Parkway - Wolverton stood DML Oxford expecting a crew change at 0702 but it's now 0750 and it's still waiting, so could it be a deeper issue than running a sim which was started using an old loader version?

Regards,

Phil.

No; the internal behaviour of crew changes was changed between loader versions - I suspect the failure for the crew change to take place is symptomatic of the change in internal working between the versions. A warning about potential incompatibility is presented when you load a save from an older version.

The OP had a problem with a train that entered the simulation after the update had happened though- wouldn't a change to the logic only affect a train that was mid-change when the save was made?

It appears all trains in Oxford are having infinite crew changes now. I have attached a save where 1P07 is on crew change. This game was started after the Loader update. The train crew called it would be there at 0624.

I found that this problem arises if there is an entry in the Train Type Crew Change dwell time box.

Until Geoff has sorted the whole issue of crew change and dwell time (see historical posts ad nauseum) then I find that a Location based dwell time of 2 mins with crew change also ticked works rather well..

Barry,

They do if you put 2 min in the location dwell time box!...

I have found my SimSigLoader.exe.bak and it was version 4.6.3. However the Oxford sim 1.3 requires a newer Loader to start a game (and loading a saved game from 4.6.5 in the 4.6.3 loader causes all signals with no route set to start flashing).

I have done a mechanical edit to the 2016 TT to add 2 minutes dwell time to all trains with crew change (save for one which already had 4 minutes dwell time). I'm not sure whether I am allowed to share the timetable here?

Well it doesn't even work. Even with a dwell time added, 1P07 still stays changing its crew indefinitely. Save attached.

If that's the case then the author of Oxford Winter 2016 TT needs to update the timetable.

Well, let me put it like this. I don't know the Oxford timetable or indeed, the Oxford sim.

But I've just checked - there is a Train Type Dwell Time of 2 minutes on 1P07 which you need to make 00:00 and replace that with a LOCATION based dwell time of 2min.

I said in an earlier post that the cause was 2:00 in the train type box which I found out by experimentation. This needs to be removed before you do anything else. To do that, you need to edit the train type accordingly.

As to whether it works - don't ask me, ask the 80 odd people who have downloaded the Peterborough 1977 timetable with over 1000 trains in it, which I uploaded a few weeks ago.

There are any number of trains taking relief and all use a location based dwell time of 2:00 and there are no infinite crew changes.

Ah I see, I had added the location based dwell time but not removed the train type based one. I have now removed it and... 1P07 departs on time. Thanks!

Good, glad you've got it working.

This has the added advantage that if the train is late it will still stop for its full 2 min for relief. Without it, it would arrive and depart almost immediately, which is not realistic.

I hope that, sometime in the future when Geoff has time to get to grips with the train-crew relief/dwell time issue that this will be unnecessary but it is a work around which works quite well.

Regards,

Vince

I have again taken a text editor to do a find & replace of all crew changes in the timetable, and here is the result, a 2016 TT with dwell times for the location only, not the train type.

If I'm not allowed to share the timetable here (I do not know who made the original), just let me know and I'll remove the attachment.
