That would be a really long movement on authority of a shunt signal surely?

I suspect from the track layout that in times gone by, there was once another siding or few which went off at the short track circuit in advance of WC37. In plans, 37 makes reference to a sub aspect rather than a main aspect. Log in to reply |

It gets more interesting! On the web I found a picture of the 1973 signalbox diagram and a second one of the box interior in 1988. Photos attached (*). It's pretty clear that the 1973 new layout had a limit of shunt sign at the west end of platform and nothing else. The next box is Widnes East and there is no connection shown for Burtonwood. The second photo, from 1988, suggests that IB signal 54 has been added and the diagram updated, but the unusual layout in the station area with a double slip on the up main remained. Soooo, I believe my earlier post was incorrect and the signal at the west end of platform 1 dates only from the resignalling of Warrington post-1988 when both platforms were signalled to accept trains from Manchester and depart them back there. That's well after Burtonwood was in serious use (it closed completely in 1993, but had been a shell for some years previously). The connections at Warrington Workshops Jn and the double slip presumably went at the same time. What all that doesn't explain is why there is anything more than a single aspect red signal on platform 1's west end. A relic of a scheme to have a crossovers at the west end of Central with a possible shunt move west on the up main, perhaps? On one picture I've seen, and yea, I cant find it again, It shows lever 37 as painted red still.
