Caldicot Crossings 26/12/2017 at 00:30 #104507

Greetings all.

Having had a session on Newport I have noticed something regarding the level crossing at Caldicot and I think, from what I know of the area, that the layout of crossings is mistaken on the sim. My thoughts are as follows:

1. Caldicot Crossing is labelled as being a TELephone one. There is indeed a telephone crossing at Caldicot but it is right next to the station.

2. The crossing labelled as "Caldicot Crossing" does still exist but has traffic signals and 4 barriers. There was, at one time, a hut to keep control of the level crossing but this was abolished 29-Oct-2012 when control passed to South Wales ROC in Cardiff.

I attach photos, taken from Google Earth, below. If the above was taken into account then Signal UM147, which is the Gloucester-bound starter at Caldicot, needs to be moved slightly to allow for addition of a TEL crossing at Caldicot station while Caldicot Crossing needs either to be redone to allow for operation from a gatebox (a pause therefore needed, perhaps, before the signals change colour when I route is set) or otherwise provide controls for operation of the crossing.

Or am I missing something here? Any thoughts?

Dave

The crossing drawn on the simulation is the crossing controlled by the now former crossing keeper at Caldicot box, and I've edited the manual to clarify this. For the rest of this post I'll refer to it as "Caldicot Symondscliff Road". (In the sim the crossing just rings you up for the odd user)

The crossing just outside Caldicot Station "Caldicot Station Road" does not appear to have been drawn on Newport panel, and I can't find any evidence of a telephone on the concentrator photos I have. All the google evidence is post Newport PSB, and several crossings between Awre and Severn Tunnel had worked done to them.

I'm planning to visit the SRS archives in 2018, and I will see if any further evidence comes to light. I'm reluctant to change the simulation without evidence, as someone may well come along and tell me it's wrong and provide different evidence.

Thank you for a very thorough post though!

Greetings Karl,

Thanks for your reply. I have had a look at some photos online.

I have found some January 2008 photos of Newport Panel. In the photo the TEL crossing next to the station is labelled on the panel as "Caldicot Halt Xing" while the other was labelled simply as "Caldicot Crossing". Also of note in the linked photo below is that Caldicot station is referred to as "Caldicot Halt"! Caldicot Halt Xing comes just before signal UM163 as can be seen here: http://photos.signalling.org/picture?/2268/category/1452-2008_january

In more modern times the two crossings - the TEL one at Caldicot Station and the one formerly controlled by the gatekeeper at Caldicot - both appear on the SWCC as part of Severn Tunnel workstation. On the screen the lines toward Gloucester are the upper ones and Caldicot LC is labelled as MCB-CCTV. I realise we cannot imitate the layout of SWCC on SimSig but, for reference, the photo can be found at http://photos.signalling.org/picture?/5636/category/1848-2013_november

Hope this clears up any confusion. I realise, of course, that whether you revise the sim to incorporate both crossings is entirely down to you. For my part I am simply glad to have some more of my regular work area to play on so well done for it.

Cheers,
Dave

Interesting photo, I've not seen the panel with half of Caldicot station missing. I wonder if it was staging work for the move to the ROC?

I'll hold off on changing it till I dig something up on the rest of the crossings.

No worries Karl: glad to be of help. Also I think, going by the older photo, that the TC overlaps at what we have as Caldicot Crossing on the sim are wrong as well but I am not sure.

I think half the station missing is just a misplaced panel tile as it isn't shown like that on the schematic.

The crossing is shown on the IRJ for the old panel Interlocking but no telephone is drawn on the plan. I see there is one on Dave's images on the first post, so I suspect it was added with the resignalling.
