On a visit to Perth today, I noticed a theatre indicator mounted on the same post as P98 (at the end of platforms 2/3) but facing in the opposite direction, i.e. for trains arriving at Perth. Does anyone know what purpose it serves? As far as I could tell, it's a theatre indicator and not a banner repeater. The indicator can be seen in this streetview image: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@56.3900055,-3.4382172,3a,19.2y,348.37h,84.71t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sX220AO0AwWutwxSFlTjwYw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en "Don't stress/ relax/ let life roll off your backs./ Except for death and paying taxes/ everything in life.../ is only for now." It lights up with with the route, when the route is set from Perth to Hilton. (South) So if I see a L or an U on the main aspect leaving platform 3, then that indicator shows the same. All the starting signals heading south have this set up at perth. I'll take a picture from the cab on Wednesday morning when I'm leaving. I'll also ask the box, if its our union rep that's on, what their purpose is. It’s a back facing route indicator provided for long, loco hauled trains starting ahead of the signal. Very common on early power singalling schemes (Perth was commissioned in 1962) and still provided right up to the mid 80s - see Dundee (commissioned 1985) for similar examples. The back indicator on P96 signal was originally capable of showing 7 different route indications. P.s. if you mean McDougall, you won’t be speaking to him in the box any more as he has retired. I doubt he’d know anything about back facing indicators anyway. Log in to reply The following users said thank you: Steamer, Hap |

Does this one? In the throat of King's Cross there are four indicators mounted on Gasworks tunnel headwalls facing the station, and four more at platform ends facing the tunnels. These light up with the platform number if a route is set into or out of (respectively) the corresponding tunnel track. These are for the benefit of staff walking across the throat area. Didn't know who and that he's retired. How to report an issue: www.SimSig.co.uk/Wiki/Show?page=usertrack:reportanissue Log in to reply |

In a previous job I had the task of convening a SSC to renew the unique back facing miniature banner repeater at Dumfries; I wanted to go with a bespoke amber coloured LED equivalent from Dorman but disappointingly it proved to be a step too far for the sighting committee to agree and a conventional white one was specified in the end...It’s a back facing route indicator provided for long, loco hauled trains starting ahead of the signal.Back facing indicators are supposed to light up amber (*not* yellow).
