Some of my signalling students who played the Exeter sumulation wondered about the role of shunting signal 622. There is a shunt route from 622 to LOS2, but no shunt route leading to 622. Since all main signals leading into Norton Fitzwarren do not have a shunt aspect, what is the purpose of signal 622?

Signal E622 is the exit from the Down (Dock) Siding /entrance to the Down Relief at Taunton.

Do you mean 630? Not sure about the LOS but the shunt signal allows trains on the Up Main to set back to the West Somerset Railway. The route to the LOS may be there to allow trains to split on the Up Main, shunt the front part of the consist back into the WSR then for the loco to return to the Up Main and set back to the remainder of the consist but that looks like a once in a thousand years sort of operation.

I just noticed that I had an outdated signal numbering plan from 2013. The signal I was referring to is now the 630.

Maybe, in the past the layout was more complex with more shunting operations. So the LOS was just left there after having reduced the infrastructure.
