Crew Changes as Messages instead of Phone Calls 14/08/2018 at 05:52 #111020

This is a new feature in some recent sims (e.g. Moss Vale and Carlisle).

TBH, I find the calls a bit annoying to deal with. Any chance of an option to make them go in the message log rather than be phone calls?

Phone calls are quite a big part of a signaller's workload, you know!

Long discussion about this (in the midst of long discussions about other things) in this topic. The topic never reaches a conclusion but there are reports towards the end of the topic from those actually involved in the day-to-day running of the UK railway that in many instances there would only be a phone call if something was going wrong rather than by default. In light of those comments from people who have been there, I'm not sure that there is a case for a blanket rule in SimSig that the relief driver will ring and the signaller must answer.

However, in fairness we are better off now than we were when v4.6.6 was first released as at least you are no longer hassled by the incident report printer flashing at you every time there is a crew change which has already been advised by phone and by report in the message window.

To add to this. Would all classes of train ring relief through?

Take Carlisle for example. Would parcels/passenger trains which make unadvertised stops for crew relief ring through to say they are ready or just ring TRTS when the crew are ready.

That as opposed to say a freightliner booked for a crew change.

From my experience on the back desk in Derby box many years ago, while many parcels/mails drivers often rang to let you know they were there and ask how their trains were doing, it was mostly only the freight men who rang to let you know they were in the cabin either on Platform 1 or at 4 Shed. You rarely heard from the passenger men unless there were big delays.

From a sim point of view, I'm happy with the phone calls because, while it does increase your workload it also adds an extra touch of realism. And the calls only increase the SimSigger's workload by half really because in the real world when trains were booked relief you still had to ring the cabin to let the driver know his job was getting close by and tell him where to go to meet it (we had 11 platform ends + 3 Goods line signals as designated relieving points at Derby), and often just ask whoever picked up the phone if there was a driver in there for ???? as they occasionally forgot to tell you they were there or they weren't actually there because their inwards train (either working in or travelling pass) was delayed, or as was occasionally the case at Derby, the Toton service car was stuck in traffic, in which case you had to then loop the train until its relief arrived.

Regards,

Phil.
