This may seem a bit trivial and may have been mentioned in a previous post, but couldn't the signallers in the sim be a bit more polite? Every time that a level crossing user phones the signaller to advise him that they have finished using the crossing, the signaller just says 'OK' I'm sure that in real life, the signaller would perhaps even crack a joke, but at least say 'thanks' or 'thank you' Or maybe they don't. I don't know. Everything that you make will be useful - providing it's made of chocolate. Log in to reply |

In real life you are correct, the process of arranging for line block and line clear would be a bit more wordy, but the salient points of Safety Critical communication is to be clear, precise and to the point. Without splitting hairs over calls that may be found on line or any real life odd examples, you wouldn't make a joke in such calls.

"Why are you herding your sheep across the line at 3 o'clock in the morning" might be a fair question!

"At 13:23:23 hrs, the signaller answered a call from the car driver at Dock Lane UWC-T, who requested “Three rhino to go across – 72 seconds”. The signaller repeated the message back to the caller and immediately gave permission to cross, stating “safe to cross”." "The car driver was a frequent user of Dock Lane crossing, and was well known to the signallers. She was always good natured on the phone and always asked for 72 seconds to cross with some form of wild animal. Signallers recognised that her requests were light hearted and that she would be crossing with a vehicle and would require sufficient time to cross with it." (This was a "near miss" and neither the driver nor the three rhinos were hurt.) Log in to reply |

Certainly more of a crossing coordinator position than a signalling position, as it were! SimSig Boss Log in to reply |

That's the kind of comment I meant when I used the incorrect description 'joke' In actual fact, I've been reading some of the RAIB reports. Quite an interesting "near miss" at Egmanton level crossing, Nottinghamshire in 2017. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/733438/R112018_180809_Egmanton.pdf Anyway, I digress. The point is, would it be possible to amend the signaller’s reply in the sims to something a bit more akin to those in real life?
