We'll be at the Crystal Palace until 5:30 or 6:00 so if you get finished in time and you're somewhere nearby you're welcome to pop in for a pint.

I didn't see Postals post about using buses until now.. Seems some of the messages in the forum has moved etc.

Travelling via bus isn't my favorable option, in fact I try and avoid using buses. Sadly I had to use the BTS Buses on my line from Nov 2017 to April 2018, they weren't too bad on RRBs.

I have a plan in place for now and hoping to be dropped off at Preston for 8am and collected at 8.30pm when I'm back at Preston.
My other alternative is await news from RMT about the strikes which I'm praying for.
Last alternative is to use the said bus service that postal mentioned.
I can now confirm my place at Glasgow. So will see you all there, I will have my fathers laptop in tow also but I've been strict instruction not to let others use it. When I get to the wetherspoons I'm looking for a back room of sorts? any guidance in the place?

Plan A - dropped off at Preston for 8am and collected at 8.30pm when I'm back at Preston.
I'll be using this option now I have it confirmed.

Plan B - await news from RMT about the strikes which I'm praying for.
Forget it, Northerns strikes are continuing after talks failed again.

Plan C - use the said bus service that postal mentioned
I'll forget this option until I really need it which I don't think.

I've been completely done over/bent over/shafted any other word that rhymes with screwed. Can no longer get my shift covered. Altered workings and my cover can't work over a route that's on the diagram. So I will have to pull out. Don't finish until 14:41. If by a miracle I can get my last part covered then I could be in Glasgow for 12.

Edit: Should arrive in QST at 12:16, AS long as there are no delays anywhere.

We are in the Alcove. We'll have a couple of signs up if they have somewhere we can display them.

Oh that's the 10.44 from BYF that I'll probably be on, though I have it in mind to travel via Edinburgh and see if I can catch some 365s- (commuter withdrawal symptoms).

I'll be the guy diving into the toilet to get changed out of uniform into civvies and the wife uplifting kit bag/machine and offloading laptop and trainers at Perth. AS long as my spare man doesnt get used.

When I read Cathcart as a sim, do I take it as being Glasgow Central or just Cathcart ?

Cathcart circle and Neilston (fringed at Muirhouse Jns).

I'd love to see Glasgow Central come back - it's long disappeared from the SimSig website.

It's never been a SIM.

Just the Cathcart circle.

Any chance of a Cathcart screenshot, for those of us not at the meet?

Thanks to all at the Glasgow Meet today. Sims on offer as Karl mentioned was Hereford and Port Talbot - Aron [AR88] most wanted simulation is loooking near complete.

I had Hereford left side panels to my control, while Mr Buster [Simon] had the right half of the panels etc. I quite enjoyed the simulation and looking forward to Port Talbot that has a wide range of variety on the sim.

Thanks to all and the organiser of the evening [Postal]?

Typed while on the train at Carlisle though a neutral section at Upperby Jn.. :-)

Being my first trip – and with a few hours to spare on the train home – I thought I would put together a trip report from the Glasgow meet.

After the Beast from the East ate up my chances of making the (much more local) Birmingham meet, I did say to myself I would try and make a subsequent meet. The first opportunity that aligned with my calendar was today’s meet; so armed with a bag full of laptops (3 – a main, reserve, and reserve reserve), I blearily made my way in the semi-darkness to Rugby for the 07.03 direct to Glasgow.

The train journey was consistent; it consistently lost 2-3 minutes between every stop!
Not to worry; I made it to the venue at the scheduled 11.30 start time when I quickly worked out why the meetings are held in the pub. Most of the contingent were safely draining their first (or maybe second) beer.

Once the minor technical snags were unknotted, everything was set up for the 12 noon start. The sims on offer were Port Talbot and Hereford (chained) and a standalone Cathcart, so 3 new unreleased sims to have a crack at.

First up I paired with Aaron on Hereford, with me taking the “right” side which was Hereford and then down to Little Mill Junction (fringe to Newport), plus intermediate panels Tram Inn, Pontrilias, Abergavenny, and also the Pantyffynnon single line up to Broome. Aaron covered the 8 boxes from Moreton-on-Lugg to Dorrington.

The single line was pretty straightforward with some token exchanges and about 1000 level crossings; thankfully the LCs were disabled. The other panels weren’t too tricky; there’s a few regulation options with various loops so a bit of thinking to do, especially with some heavily delayed (and early running) freights. Karl who is the developer for both Hereford and Port Talbot was on hand to provide helpful assistance. Overall I think Hereford would be doable solo with the LCs switched off.

Next up I tried my hand at Port Talbot. The sim covers the Westcad areas which starts at the fringe to Cardiff (PSB), through Port Talbot, Swansea and on to Llanelli.

I picked up the “B” panel which covered the main line between Port Talbot and Swansea and the district line between Port Talbot and the heart of Wales line. A good mix of passenger and freight, although the B panel didn’t seem quite as busy as the Westcad or “C” panels. The quieter panel allowed me to take in the finest Scottish cuisine – a haggis pizza washed down with a pint of Tennents.

Finally, I got a quick run on the Cathcart sim. This is a very different style as it uses a “one click” route setting method. It’s probably easier to try it rather than me trying to explain it if you aren’t familiar with this style; apparently it will be out very soon. John (postal) very kindly offered training to a number of us today; you do need a bit of direction to understand it; John mentioned there will be instructions in the sim manual.

During the day it was great to put a few faces to names and it it’s clear there is a lot of work that goes into preparing the sims, preparing the timetables and keeping things up-to-date.

Thanks to those involved in the organisation. I’ll try and make Birmingham next year .....

Well you seem to have enjoyed this one so you don't need to wait until next year. We'll be doing it all again on Saturday 17th. November at The Walrus and The Carpenter in London where all are welcome. You can sign up here.

Now that I'm back with land and not the drunken land..

The Glasgow meet was brilliant and further more I really enjoyed it and the company so thanks everyone.

The London Event I sadly won't be attending this time due to work etc. I don't fancy taking anymore time off etc.
In the meantime I will attempt to attend a couple next year with the exception that Tokyo won't be possible for me.

By 'one click' do you mean we have an OCS panel?

Yes and it is an accurate representation as Cathcart was unusually a push button, rather than a cooker switch, style OCS panel with one button for each available route.

I think the user may be able to choose between the prototypical OCS operation or traditional NX.

Well I'll be... somewhere between Westinghouse OCS, London Transport OCS and 1960s BR NX. That's a real mongrel!

Were there any others like it?

Peter hasn't told the story behind those photos.

He'd organized some box visits on a day when we were both in Glasgow (my office Christmas party was the evening before). Cathcart was, IIRC, our first visit of the day and I hadn't had time to dump my suitcase anywhere, so had it with me. We were supposed to be meeting the MOM at an access point who would then walk us to the box and back again. But when he turned up he was just going off shift. So he pointed us along the track towards the box and told us to just walk there on our own (Peter, there was some fuss about the key; can you remember?). So the two of us walked along the cess of the Cathcart Circle, me dragging a suitcase, without benefit of escort or hi-vis, to the box and, later, back again.

The key - yes we were now locked inside the boundary fence in the trackbed of the former loop with some 100 or so yards to walk to the box, up the tower and meet the signaller. When it was time to leave the signaller was on his own so could not take us back to the gate. He gave us the key and advised us when to move so we were not observed by any train drivers passing. We had to leave the key under a stone by the gate.

We then hoved off to Central box where they had not got a clue we were coming but let us in any way. Lastly, we did Paisley where the red carpet was awaiting us. I recall that the controller there later transferred to the new control centre at Cowlairs and a few years later I had a visit there too.
