Can anyone explain to me what trains 5Z01 and 5Z02 in the Edinburgh August 2006 TT are for? As far as I can see, they come out of Haymarket, whizz through Waverley, shunt backwards and forwards a couple of times between Gorgie Jn and Niddrie W Jn, before going back through Waverley into Haymarket? They just seem to be random trains sent to foul up the works at busy times because the TT writer (thanks Peter!) felt like being mean! I'm sure that's not the case, but any enlightenment would be welcome. Sam Sam Wainwright Log in to reply |

The TT was not actually done by Peter, but I'm sure James will enlighten us.

They were in the raw data used to compile the timetable that James worked on- other than that I can only speculate that they are some sort of route learning/testing run- maybe they should be randomised- I'll look into that latyer and see if there are any further clues. I just assumed that they were driver training runs, as they were using an "out of the way" part of the network and shuttling back and forward in that fasion.

Yeah, it would make sense to take a gaggle of new recruits out and have them take over one after the other to go back and forward - give them a feel for what it's like behind the controller... At the moment I'm playing Ed'boro with ARS on everywhere except at Waverley, so they mostly look after themselves. Thanks, Sam Sam Wainwright Log in to reply |
