Two Tamper Movements Take The Same Signal, Wakefield Kirkgate 06/04/2019 at 20:04 #117306

Running the 1991 TT on Thursday, on-track machines 7Z01, 7Z02 and 7Z03 are returning from Leeds to Wakefield Kirkgate to stable. 7Z01 was running late but as it is last out in the evening and so needs to be on the buffer stops in the tamper sdg I held 7Z02 and 7Z03 on the Up Goods to get 7Z01 by. When I eventually pulled off for 7Z02 to enter Platform 2 7Z03 followed it out into the platform.

I was busy with other moves around Knottingley at the time so did not see if WK1238 Sig remained clear for 7Z03 to take. I only realised Z03 had followed Z02 out when he couldn't fit in the platform and asked for authority to proceed, and the Up Goods TC had cleared. Should WK1238 Sig be 'first wheel release' to prevent this sort of thing from happening?

Interestingly enough both the signalling diagram and the control tables show this as last wheel replacement on all routes from WK1238 signal

The protection against this is the rulebook. The second driver should ensure the signal returns to danger and clears again before accepting it. Plenty of locations have rear wheel replacement departing a permissive platform.

Is this maybe an issue with core code? This used to happen on lime Street (old sim) and Euston when a loco on the stops would follow its train out.

See also this old thread.
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

I did expect that the sim was created as per the control tables, but was just wondering if maybe a derogation from the control tables to prevent a second train following the first in the sim might be a way to go for the time being, although that said I am always a believer in the sims being as close to the real thing as possible. As you say Joe in real life the driver of the second train would wait for the signal to be replaced and cleared again, but as the sim drivers can't read the rule book, pending anything that can be done in the core code to prevent the second train from taking the signal I will not use the loop permissively if I can avoid it. Alternatively I could replace the signal myself and wait for the COA phone call from the driver. I also didn't realise that there had been issues in sims like Lime St and Euston (I have both but don't ever recall having a loco follow a train out of a platform, but that could just be my memory fading).
