So - I've been feeling a bit jaded with Simsig recently - I've been playing a lot of the KingsX and Birmingham New Street sims, and the endless presession of fairly predicatable express trains has drained me. Anyone want to recommend a sim that focuses more on freight - preferable with a lot of ground frames, unpredictable freight and slow moving stuff but not much absolute block working or AWS? Some of the older donationware sims were good for this, but IIRC many had bugs - I can't find any of the old gif's of their layouts, so not sure which they were - be good to hear about newer, less buggy sims that fit this form. Thanks in advance. Dave Log in to reply |

South Humberside was always great for freight but as you say had a couple of bugs in it. the new West Yorkshire sim is amazing for freight flows, especially the 1991 timetable as it covers a full week of MGR workings which are different everyday and are pretty much run 24/7 in addition to the other flows. well worth the cost. Peak District is also really good for a steady flow of cement and stone trains out of Peak forest/Tunstead/Earles Sdgs. again it also has a 1987 timetable which has a lot of freight and shunts to operate around Peak Forest. that timetable also covers a full week so will vary each time you play it. (this sim has absolute block working but it can be turned off on startup). Other than that Saltley is really good for freight flows but is very difficult to manage single handed once passenger trains start to run regularly. they are my Four top picks for Freight and interesting movements. If you haven't purchased a licence for West Yorkshire then can I suggest you do as the 1991-1992 tt I wrote for the sim is probably the buiest for freight traffic as well as a myriad of STN traffic that runs on certain days of the week. The freight traffic on that timetable is around 40 freight trains per passenger trains. It's the busiest place in the country for freight traffic.

Carlisle with Pascal's 1979-1980 TT has enough freight to keep you busy (the TT is not explicit so you have to work out whether to recess the freight by yourself) but also includes lots of passenger train shunts and loco changes.

Have you considered Oxford, using one of the BR era timetables I produced (1974/ 1978 and later)? Plenty of freight, many ground frames and telephone requests at stop boards and lots of careful regulating required. Oh, and the passenger trains are not as regular as they first seem...

Dont forget Motherwell , an absolute ton of freight into and out of Scotland, and for sheer old school joy, Trent, which doesnt get as much love any more but complete hoot to run with a ton of coal in and out of Toton
